The club is sad to announce the passing of Andy McLeod, a Club Vice President, who died on July 1st 2018 aged 91.

Andy passed away after the resurgence of a cancer for which he was first treated 14 years ago. He was a long-standing member of the club from the 1950s, having captained the 1st XV in season 1955/56. He was a keen ‘weekend tourist’ to Twickenham, Murrayfield, Cardiff, Dublin and Paris with a number of the Club's current senior citizens who remember him fondly as a private person in many ways, sharing a close-knit and loving family. He was considered good company at all times and coped with his earlier major surgery with stoicism and dignity.

Following the news of his passing tributes have been received from far and wide, from within the UK and abroad. The following small selection of people’s thoughts reflect the great respect he was held in by those who either played with him in his early days or met him in his senior years:

“..I played 1st team with Andy and am so sorry to lose an old friend, a friendly face I always assume to be there..”
“I thought he was indestructible”
“We always wore white rugby shorts - except for Andy who seemed to have a stock of old khaki ones. Odd what you immediately remember about someone. We will all miss him for different reasons”
“A lovely man and perfect gentleman”.
“..a brilliant alicadoo who was always there for a good chat when I was captain and coach”
“..a rugby enthusiast and a man that will be sadly missed at Wirral Rugby Club”
“Farewell to another club legend”
“A true Wirralian…”
“..always ready for a chat about the cricket..”
“..full of encouragement and enthusiasm for all the players, very knowledgeable and more importantly a genuine supporter of Wirral”
“Those bicycle clips will be sadly missed”

The Club and Andy’s friends send their sincere condolences to his family, to his son Alan, daughters Fiona, Lindsay and Ailsa and to his many grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday 17th July at United Reform Church, Kings Lane, Bebington CH63 8LX followed by the committal at Landican at 1.30pm.

Andy was 1st XV captain in season 1955/56 (see photo), before the club had relocated to the Memorial Ground and was still playing at Hooton. Did you play in this team? Who do you recognise?
