An inexperienced Wirral side lose against well-drilled opposition from Altrincham Kersal.

Wirral fielded an experimental team in this first round Cheshire Vase match against a much stronger Altrincham Kersal team, fielding only 6 first team regulars from last season’s successful team.
AK took the lead after 10 minutes when a line out 10m from the line was taken by AK and they mauled the ball over the line which was subsequently well converted by the full back. 0-7. Three minutes later Wirral were on the score card when AK were caught off side and from 20m out and 15m in from the touchline, Sam Broadbent duly scored. 3 – 7
Wirral then saw pressure from AK but Wirral’s defence kept out them out; on 30 mins there was an early contender for tackle of the season - the ball sped down the AK backs to release their right winger, who cut through the Wirral defence at pace and was in the act of scoring near the posts when a well timed tackle by Adam Pierpoint, stunned the winger who promptly dropped the ball. Three minutes later, Richard Lloyd Jones was yellow carded for coming in from the wrong side and losing a player weakened our defence allowing the AK No 8 (ex Waterloo) to take an inside pass and score, the try was not converted.3-12 This was the half time score.
Half time saw substitutions, Sam Capper on for Ali Child, Joe Laddle on for Gareth Burke and Harry Broadbent for Graham Phelan.
With AK again applying pressure in our 20 m area, 7mins into the second half, saw the left winger take a crash ball 15 m out to score under the posts, this was converted 3-19. Tom Clegg came on for Tom Robinson. After 14 mins AK extended their lead, when from 10m out, a well worked move saw Dan Smith the AK No 8 crash over for his second try, again converted. 3-26
Wirral then came into the game with the young players eager to prove themselves against such opposition with thrusting runs and a willingness to throw the ball all over the field. In atypical move, the ball went out to the right and with little room to work in, Adam Pierpoint ran strongly to force his way over in the corner despite the attention of a number of AK players. The try was not converted. 8-26
With play opening up, AK were keen to use their backs and despite good defence from Wirral we could not keep out AK ,who scored with a long pass out to the right winger who scored 15m from the posts, this was also converted. 8-33
The final score came from Wirral, where good breaks from Jason Green and Harry Broadbent saw play taken into the AK 20m, a quick release saw the ball down the line for Ali Baker to take the ball some 25m out to beat a couple of players and score. The try was not converted. 13-33
Although Wirral lost this game we need to bear in mind that there was a considerable number of the first team squad not available but the players who represented Wirral today did the club proud against a well drilled AK team.
