Bonus Point win comes at a cost

With the Vice President’s luncheon, a larger than usual crowd was down for the game against our Cheshire colleagues Lymm, with both teams situated in mid table. There were a couple of changes to the team, who had played so well at Sheffield Tigers last week, with MARK WILLIAMS making his debut on the left wing as ADAM SHELDON was not available. ROSS PAGE was retained at prop and the substitutes were JAMES REEVE, CHRIS TYSON and CHRIS HUGHES.
The match was played in ideal conditions with the sun breaking through the morning haze. Wirral were playing towards the main road in the first half.
It was Wirral who started the quicker with CRAIG HARVEY making a 50m break and from play in the Lymm half, a further half break by the same player enabled ROB PEARL to score in the corner, the conversion was missed. 5-0 (7mins). From the kick off, Lymm had the opportunity to reduce the arrears but a kick from 34m went wide. A kick through by Lymm was collected some 60m out and after a couple of passes, TOM PARRY was in the clear to put ROB PEARL in for his second try, with CRAIG HARVEY converting from the touch line. 12-0 (18minutes).
At this stage ROSS PAGE brought play to an immediate stop and it was immediately evident that ROSS had incurred a serious injury. It now appears that he has dislocated his knee cap coupled with serious damage to his knee ligaments and is due to have an operation at the end of this week. CHRIS HUGHES came on for ROSS. 25 minutes. 5 minutes later, CRAIG HARVEY was assisted from the field with knee ligament damage. JAMES REEVE came on to play at No8. CHRIS SPEED to wing, with MARK WILLIAMS moving to full back and DAN HARVEY taking over the fly half role from his brother.
A bout of kicking without finding touch resulting in a break by RYAN STEAD who put away TOM PARRY and after a further passes saw, SAM “Makinson!” BROADBENT squeezing in at the corner, the conversion was missed. 17-0 (37 mins). From the kick off, Lymm regained the ball and after putting pressure on Wirral spun the ball out right with Rick Halford scoring and Richard McEvoy converting. After almost an hour, the half came to an end with Wirral leading 17-7 with the penalty count in their favour 8-1.
A long kick downfield enabled Wirral to put pressure on Lymm, a half break by ROB PEARL took play up to the Lymm line and after a number of thrusts, prop, JACK YARKER forced his way over from a couple of metres out close to the posts, DAN HARVEY converted. 24-7 (44 mins). Five minutes later Wirral were back in the Lymm 20m area and after pressure, PAUL LEWIS now crashed over close the posts, duly converted by DAN to extend the Wirral lead to 31-7 (49 mins). CHRIS TYSON went on for JAMES REEVE.
We were now seeing sustained pressure from Lymm as they controlled the ball more effectively. CHRIS SPEED went for an interception but was deemed to be a deliberate knock on by the referee and was yellow carded. There seemed to be an element of injustice here as at this stage, Lymm had had 18 penalties awarded against them as opposed to 3 against Wirral. From the resultant scrum, Lymm spread it wide allowing Mark Wells to cross wide out and this was converted from the touchline by Tom Shard. 31-14 (59 mins). A further opportunity was missed when the referee brought back play for a forward pass. On 69 mins Wirral increased their lead with a penalty from DAN HARVEY, 34-14.
This was followed by inspired play from Lymm as they scored two converted tries through Adam Bray and Dan Horton, conversions by Tom Shard. 34-28 (75 mins). The momentum was now with Lymm as Wirral hung on. A penalty opportunity by DAN HARVEY was missed but kept play down in the Lymm 20m area. With time ebbing out a deft kick by Dan Harvey found touch 5 m from the Lymm line and after pressure on Lymm as they tried to run the ball from their own 20m area resulted in a penalty, which from 25 wide out, DAN HARVEY converted to deny Lymm a losing bonus point as the referee called time.
Losing playmaker, CRAIG HARVEY had a definite effect on the game and with the injuries it limited the changes Wirral could undertake. However our thoughts go out to ROSS and that his operation is successful later in the week and we all hope that he has a speedy recovery and look forward to see him back down at the club as a spectator in the weeks ahead.
