Matt Dalton debuts for the first team as the injuries continue to take their toll.

There were a number of changes for the game against Lymm, who themselves had to make a late team selection. When comparing the teams that played against each other 13 months ago, there were only a handful of the same players taking part.
With ROB PEARL and JOE MURRAY not available through injury and joining the growing list of those not available, PAUL LEWIS went to blindside and JOSH STEAD came into lead the side from scrum half. CHRIS TYSON came into the second row and MATT RINGER returned to the team after exams. There was a complete change to the subs bench with GARETH BURKES, MIKE WARREN and MATT DALTON, the latter making his first team debut- he is in his final year at Wirral Grammar.
Wirral played the first half towards the clubhouse. In the 2nd minute, Wirral had a scrum some 20m out and the ball was passed down the line with DAN HARVEY putting in ALI BAKER in the corner. From the touchline, JAMES ANNETTS converted. 7-0. TOM PARRY was controversially sin- binned by the exchange referee in the 10th minute when he tackled a Lymm player and was deemed to have deliberately knocked on. On 12 minutes, Lymm kicked a penalty from 35m by Cormac Nolan and on 22 minutes took the lead when Richard McEvoy made an outside break round his opposing number and ran in from 40m and the conversion was kicked 7-10 (22 mins) - it appeared that from this break that DAN HARVEY was carrying an injury.
Wirral were letting themselves down with a number of passes being dropped, wrong options being taken , not controlling the ball and looking to off load at every occasion and thus giving the ball back to Lymm. The inconsistencies of the referee were becoming apparent when RYAN STEAD was dump tackled- no yellow card- just a penalty. In the period before half time, Cormac Nolan was able to increase the Lymm lead to 7-13. On the stroke of half time, the Lymm open side was sin-binned.
Early in the second half, Lymm increased their lead when a ball down the line resulted in an overlap and left winger Rhys Jones scoring in the corner, the try was not converted. 7-18 (25 minutes). Another Lymm player, the second row Will Baldwin was then sin binned.
Wirral were on the attack and putting pressure on the Lymm line and could not find a way through, the ball was spun out but intercepted by Lymm, who then proceeded to lose the ball, which bobbled around the 20m area until ALI BAKER picked up and went over unopposed and from wide out, JAMES ANNETTS converted. Within a minute Wirral were in the lead when from the kick off, MARK WILLIAMS collected and ran through several tackles before setting up JAMES ANNETTS who himself shrugged would be tacklers to race in from 30m and convert his own try.21-18 (55 minutes). MATT DALTON came on to make his debut in place of CHRIS TYSON.
Wirral did not hold the lead for long as they lost the ball when in possession and resulted in the young Lymm centre, Lucas Titherington cutting through the Wirral defence to score under the posts and duly converted. 21-25. (63 minutes). MIKE WARREN and GARETH BURKES came on for PAUL LEWIS and CHRIS HUGHES respectively, no sooner had these substitutions taken place when DAN HARVEY went off injured and MIKE WARREN’s worse nightmare was to play on the wing and PAUL LEWIS had to return to the affray. In the final minutes of the game Wirral were again camped in the Lymm 20 area but could not get that vital score. A 5m line out was taken and caught by TOM PARRY only for him to be tackled in the air, no action taken by the official and the ball is lost and then followed by a Lymm 5m line- out and the ball thrown for the line out barely travelled the required distance enabling Lymm to clear temporarily. Back came Wirral for another line out close to the Lymm line, the opposition managed to clear and pass out left where there was no Wirral cover and a length of the field try was scored by Richard McEvoy and was not converted. This gave Lymm their try bonus point and secured victory.
There are no matches next week as England goes for the Grand Slam in Ireland and Wirral’s next match is away to Stockport on the 25th.
