Longest trip of the season sees biggest win.

I will refer to the headline later on in the report as the Wirral team met at the unearthly hour of 7.15am for the 4 hour trip to Westoe, near Newcastle with a full coach and a healthy number of supporters and a further 5 supporters who were in the area came to the match.
For the first time this season, the coaches were able to field the same starting XV as last week with the only changes being seen on the substitute’s bench. STEVE PENDERGAST came in for the injured CHRIS HUGHES, KEITH MAHON returned in place of TIM HODSON (unavailable) with CHRIS BURROWS making up the bench.
From the start of the game, it was Wirral who were quickly into their stride and from a loose maul some 30m out, the ball went out to the right and a bout of god passing saw JASON GREEN (hooker) cross in the corner for his first try of the season. James Annetts converted from the touchline. 0-7 (4 mins). Within 4 minutes, Wirral had doubled their lead, a Westoe kick downfield was fielded by JAMES ANNETTS who lofted a high kick downfield, which was fielded by Westoe and on clearing the kick was charged down leaving ALI BAKER with the simple task of picking up the ball and strolling over in the corner and this was again converted by JAMES ANNETTS from the touchline. 0-14 (8 mins).
A further opportunity arose from the kick off but on this occasion a kick through was collected by the home side. Gradually Westoe made progress up field aided by a series of penalties, which eventually led to scrum half, Judson getting Westoe on the score sheet with a penalty from in front of the posts. 3-14 (18 mins).
Wirral then clicked back into gear with a continuous wave of attacking play and from a maul 30m out, quick passing saw ROB PEARL burst through, draw the full back before putting in ALI BAKER for a try under the posts, which was duly converted. 3-21 (22 minutes). 4 minutes later from a line out 30m out and a controlled and well managed push saw Wirral push the Westoe pack over the whitewash for prop, MATT BROWN to touch down some 10m from the corner flag but this was also converted by JAMES ANNETTS, thus giving Wirral their try bonus point after 26 mins. 3-28. At this stage Wirral made three changes with PAUL LEWIS, JACK YARKER and MIKE WARREN coming off for KEITH MAHON, STEVE PENDERGAST and CHRIS BURROWS coming on for those players.
Westoe never gave up as they sought to get through the Wirral defence and did succeed only for a cover tackle by JAMES ANNETTS who bundled the right winger into touch. Further pressure came from Westoe as they were awarded a controversial penalty but the Wirral defence held out and along clearance kick from JAMES ANNETTS but Wirral back on the attack. In the minutes leading up to half time, Wirral forwards were in the ascendancy and a half break from young TOM PARRY enabled him to get a pass away to ROB PEARL ,who forced his way over the line from 10m out, JAMES ANNETTS converted to give WIRRAL a 3-35 half time lead.
As the second half started, Westoe changed their tactics to some extent using their forwards to make concerted runs at the Wirral defence and did make progress. In the 46th minute, SAM BROADBENT stifled such an attack and was caught on the bottom, only for the referee to give him a yellow card- how was he expected to roll away? This was followed by a series of scrums which saw Westoe advance towards the Wirral line but the away side managed to hold out. Following this JACK YARKER and PAUL LEWIS came back on for STEVE PENDERGAST and KEITH MAHON. This was then followed with a yellow card for the Westoe wing forward, McKay for being deliberately off side.
Wirral took advantage of Westoe being down to 14 men, as SAM BROADBENT, now back on the field, made a break through the middle, draw the full back to put ROB PEARL in for his second try close to the posts, again JAMES converted. 3-42 (58 mins). After a great tackling display, young TOM PARRY was replaced by KEITH MAHON as Wirral rang the changes. Wirral continued to attack and the next try involved two of the front row with JASON GREEN making a break before passing onto MATT BROWN who gave the final pass to the mercurial JAMES ANNETTS, who crossed under the posts and he converted his own try.3-49 (66 mins).
SAM BROADBENT left the field at this stage to be replaced by TOM PARRY who was asked to play in the centre.
Westoe continued to press and took advantage of a number of Wirral players now playing out of position. Wirral were looking to clear the pressure when a kick was charged down leaving the Westoe scrum half Judson the simple task of touching down, the try was not converted. 8-49 (68 mins).
Back came Wirral, a kick downfield was fielded by the Westoe full back who tried a chip over the oncoming Wirral players but this was caught by ALI BAKER who ran 45m unopposed to score his hat trick try under the posts. To complete an afternoon of excellent line kicking and goal kicking, JAMES ANNETTS duly converted to give him a 100% success rate. 8- 56 (70 mins).
With a number of players carrying small injuries, Wirral decided to play the remaining 10 minutes with 14 men, as JOSH STEAD came off, after another good performance and STEVE PENDERGAST came on for JACK YARKER, as our final replacement. In the remaining 10 minutes, Westoe scored two further tries through Younghusband and Clark to leave the final score 18-56 and Wirral’s second bonus point win of the season and achieving this in successive matches.
Turning back to the HEADLINE, the front row trio of MATT BROWN, JASON GREEN and JACK YARKER struck a bet at the beginning of the season. They had to grow a beard until they scored a try and to break this agreement would involve a financial penalty. As the season has progressed the beards have grown well but it got too much for JACK and last week he had to shave. Now in this match as you will have read, both MATT and JASON have both scored- this then resulted at JACK having to undertake the 3 pint challenge, which to be honest was not too successful.
Turning back to rugby matters this win lifts Wirral to 4th from the bottom with a point’s difference advantage over Morley. Next week we welcome our nearest neighbours in this league, Firwood Waterloo to the Memorial Ground and it would be advisable to get down early for this game against a team whom we have not played for many years.
