The day the rain came down !

With Wilmslow struggling for a team, I think that our heads were on an easy win. But at this level no game is easy and this one was no different. With the extra man Wirral raced into an early lead, 2 quick tries and a conversion. However, with Wilmslow getting themselves organised they started to get back into the game applying pressure to the Wirral line. Then the match changing point, Wilmslow's prop (tight head, loose head not sure as its in the front row where the dark arts are practiced) was injured. Wirral leant them one of our young colts. What a master stroke by Wilmslow ! yes Wilmslow ! two quick tries, a conversion to bring it level and then the clincher before half time, a penalty to take the lead ! Wirral losing by three, at home and against 14 men. To be honest we had done the same thing the weeks before. Its all about organisation ! I think the half time whistle came just in time for Wirral, any longer and we would have had a mountain to climb.

Second half, new game and no sun, but we did get biblical rain. Rain so hard it made a popping sound as it hit our shirts. Scrums became the order of the day, even though it was uncontested, the backs kept dropping the ball, can't think why. The turning point in the second half, was when Wirral swapped one aging player at 8 for another aging player, Headless replaced by Challinor. Wayne immediately had an impact with him running through a number of tackles to set up a try in the corner. Wirral 2 ahead. Young Phil Two Ladies then went off and not so young headless had to fill in at 9. I would like to say this helped but it didn't but Wirral managed to squeeze in another try and conversion to finish 24-12 winners. Hopefully when we play at Wilsmlow a) it won't rain b) we have a full set of brains in the team and c) Wilmslow have a full team !
