The Young lads prospered from the Panio Shifters hard work

What a surprise, one week gone and its back to normal for players. three subs last week, but having to phone up semi retired players to get a sub this week. And another thing, The home team, Birchfield having to play away at Anselmians as the Cricketeerers had first dibs on the changing rooms ! Anyway onto the match.

After playing Birchfield over a number of years but missing out last year as they were promoted from league 5 West (I was playing for the 4's then), Birchfield have managed to gain the dizzy heights of League 3 South. After a bit of a hammering the week before I was not at all surprised to come up against a fired up Birchfield team with three subs (apparently they only had 13 the week before). As we all know Birchfield work hard at their game and then enjoy the spoils afterwards and today would be no different.

After almost 6 mins of pressure from the Kick off in our own 22, we managed to gain a foot hold on the pitch and worked our way up to their 22. Some deft foot work (to the thicko's that's fast feet) our own pocket rocket Phil Tolliday who was closely marked by Birchfields 10 nipped in under the post's to start the scoring, with the Ginger Josh adding the extra's. The next 15 mins were fraught with action and we eventually extend our lead with a well worked try from Chris Crowley in the corner, The Ginger wizard missing with the extra's. I think that some of us switched of then as towards half time Birchfield barged their way over for a well worked try but missed the extras.

With Mike Parkinson limping off the old stager the Senior Ginger Connolly came on for his first father and son game ! and what an impact he had. Taking the ball at pace from his some (well when I say pace, might be a slight exageration) he set up numerous rucks which were well supported by the fast mobile back row (thats me and Jimmy !) These attacking plays resulted first in a Penalty (Ginger Josh converting) and then a further try for Crowley, which to be honest was an outstanding piece of play. First going outside his man, and the winger before chipping the full back, collecting the ball on the bounce and scampering in the corner ! Conversion missed but the ball had started to roll in our direction. Young Jonny Carroll duly applied a try as well, for a young lad a) he knows where the try line is, b) he's not scared of a tackle c) His M&D were watching but did not buy the customary Jug for 1st try for seniors ! Teapot of shame I think next week Kevin ! Connolly Added the extras and later a Penalty to what we thought was out of sight. Kerian Sweeney also added a try which much like Crowley rounded his man and chipped and chased for a score in the corner. With the Score at 37-5 we took our foot of the gas again and Birchfield duly capitalised scoring two good tries.

The final Score of Wirral 3's 37 - 15 Birchfield 2's belies a good game and wobetide anyone who under estimate's Birchfield, they have a good mixture of young and old as well as the gifted and grafters. They should stay up but just need the rub of the green to get a couple of wins under their belts. I look forward to our home match later in the season.
