Not the Start we all wanted !

On a bright sunny afternoon, Wirral with their second home game of the season were playing second top, newly promoted Broughton Park 4's lead by the ever youthful (although his hair colour would suggest otherwise) Kevin O'Brien. It was back to the norm as We were not at full strength and struggling to maintain a full team, however Broughton Park were in a worse state only able to field 11 and without a front row. Like all good club players, KOB had decided to not take from the lower team so that more players get a game, which to be fair is how the game should be played. I myself fell that yes the win is important but it is also how the game is played and does everyone get a game ? Yes. So with the unique league rules in place, in order that as many people play the full game, myself and Fester defected once again to the opposition to play 14 v's 13 (obviously in our favour not their's even I'm not that stupid !).

Our ref (same as last week) allowed Broughton some sort out time and then we were off ! When playing for the opposition its always worth noting that you have a bigger target on your back, side, front etc than normal and today proved not exception. The odd tackle seemed harder than normal and I'm sure my vice capt (Chris Livett) took great pleasure in battering me on more than one occasion. I'm starting to ramble now as to be honest being on the receiving end of what Wirral were doing did seem to be daunting. Needless to say various people scored, I will list them during the course of my ramblings but as most of them seemed to text me with how they thought they performed I will embellish (as I'm allowed to) to make certain stories sound more rediculous and others plain boring ! that is once my bl**dy computer decides its going to work !!! So here goes !

Scottish Ross said in the message, best try of day, splitting the defence and scoring from 50 yards out, as he's a prop we know that a) he's lying it was at most 10 yards and b) the only splitting he knows how to do is with logs for his fire !, Ginger Josh converting. Further tried in the first half came from, Gonzo (ripper to most people), Ginger Josh and our own Jonny 'Coutinho' as well as the dick of the day moment when our 2nd Row Liam 'Not so' Keane, decided that after following the ball and receiving a pass he would set up our other prop Andy 'Zorba' Gaskell for a try. Now if anyone in the club knows its Liam, never, ever let the fat greek score, as we will never hear the end of it ! and he did not fail to disappoint. The second half did not start as Wirral wanted and from the kick off Broughton Park went up the field and after a series of well times, aggressive rucking the back as crashed over the line, no not by me but another bloke, duly converted by KOB.

Although the second half eventually ended at a large score for Wirral Broughton Park are no push overs, they had two very quick wingers and if at full strength I do feel that the game would have been tighter and i would have liked to think we would have just squeeked it. I think the game at their place will be a different game (no not monopoly or scrabble). Further tries from Coutinho, 'Turbo Toliday (this his name for himself not ours which is twoladies), the ever young Stu 'go faster hair style' Hughes, Colin 'The body' Hughes and Chris Livett. Chris did not endear himself to one of his team mates as late in the game after intercepting the ball from a kick off he raced (yes raced) down the touch line and with only the smallest guy on the pitch to beat, managed to turn away from his support (Mike Stewart) and get tackled, fortunatley other support arrive and a try was scored !

One other notable moment came in the first half when 'Turbo' with his afterburners lit was flying across the pitch passing everyone in sight. Lining himself up to pass myself, the club sniper got him and down he fell flat on his face with the ball spilling forward. Well thats the story he said, the rest of us seemed to think I scared him to death and he fell down out of fright. Before i go a special mention to Darren Halstead who managed to escape for the afternoon to come out of semi-retirement and grace us with his silky skills. Thanks mate !

Enough of my ramblings, a good game was played, every one got a game and KOB has a list of fines to collect from, people taking holidays in the season (who does that, thats what the summer is for !!!), people digging holes and others on stagg do's or shopping !!!

Final Score Wirral 64 - Broughton Park 7 (10 tries and 7 conversions)

Headless.
