A ruthless second half performance sees Wirral Book a place in the Cheshire Cup Semi Finals

On a crisp Sunday Afternoon, Wirral welcomed Birkenhead Park to the memorial ground in the Cheshire Cup Quarter Final. Both sides had not played each other for some years, so Wirral went into the game confident but aware that they could be facing a potential banana skin. Wirral were at full strength with the exception of Luca Longman and a late drop out of George McCann through injury.
The first half was a tight knit affair with Birkenhead Park looking good with the ball in hand and looking to use the boot of their Fly Half to pin Wirral back into their own 22. However, Wirral's back three were more than up to the task and a loose kick saw Alfie Kimpton latch onto the ball and attack the broken field from deep to run away and give Wirral an early lead.
The rest of the first half was pretty tight, and too their credit, the young Birkenhead side were not afraid to go toe to toe with the Wirral Pack, and used the pick and go very effectively. However another score from Wirral and a late penalty kick in the half from Will Morris gave Wirral a 15-0 lead at Half time.
The second half saw Wirral really come into their own and eventually proved too much for Park. Some excellent play saw Wirral run away with the game with plenty of tries being scored as well as some stand out performances to give the coaching staff plenty to smile about. Birkenhead Park continued to threaten and nearly scored a try of their own through what can only be described as a 'Baa-Baa' routine when they opted for a penalty kick and decided to kick into the corner hoping their winger would latch on with Wirral unaware- however it was well read by a Wirral player and eventually cleared. Final Score 68-0 to Wirral.
Next Weekend, the senior colts are back at home but this time against Warrington in what may be the biggest game the lads have played. A win would see them cement their place at the top of the A league, but a Warrington win would draw themselves, Wirral and Chester into a three horse race for the title!
