Gritty Wirral avenge early season defeat. In a time when Illegal Garden parties seem to get plenty of attention, Wirral invited LSH over to play in their garden. There were no tea and cakes and definitely no social distancing, rules of 6 didn’t apply a

The visitors played towards the clubhouse and kicked off to Wirral. For those that remember the earlier fixture and this editor’s report (keep it away from their 15 at all costs ) with 2 minutes on the clock Wirral kicked deep and the 15 sent a gentle reminder by returning 50mtrs up the pitch with the ball under his arm , thankfully lesson learned and that was the last time we afforded “Wheels” that opportunity again .
Sadly, with only 5 minutes on the clock Wirral lost Will to a bad injury which we later learned was a displaced and fractured collarbone, Will walked off the pitch as brave as a lion and was overheard telling Leo “My shoulder doesn’t feel right”. We all wish you a speedy recovery Will. Wirral were for sure up for this one today and Mitch had firmly served notice on his opposite 9 that today he was in for a tough game, on 7 minutes after a couple of pick and goes from rucks Tom Whitely went in at the left corner for the opening try. 5-0 Wirral. LSH were determined to bounce back and on 15 minutes following a successful catch and drive from 7mtrs they managed to recycle good ball to cross the line and even the scores up. On 20 minutes with Wirral beginning to control the game and Mitch giving his oppo a retched time at the base of the scrum he managed to overturn a ball and swiftly find Ben Mc who made a great break deep into the LSH 22 and found Ellis in space on the right who showed good pace to squeeze in the corner. 10-5 Wirral. More good play with expansive rugby Wirral were now dominating proceedings and on 27 minutes Mitch broke clear and showed a clean pair of heels to go over near the posts, Ben successfully converted 17-5 Wirral. With the half drawing to a close Birthday boy Harry L latched onto a smart pass on 32 minutes to round the half off 22-5 in Wirral’s favour.
The second half was largely uneventful apart from a few handbags being thrown, Wirral attacked at every opportunity but to their credit LSH managed to hold up their opponents on the try line and never gave up the fight. It wasn’t until the hour mark that Wirral managed to break the second half deadlock when guess who raced 50mtrs from his own half, squatting opponents off on the way to touch down for his second try and cement his MOM performance, Ben added the extras 29-5. LSH weren’t done and managed to fashion a good try at the death that was duly converted bringing the final score to 29-12 in favour of the home team.
Thank you to the ref for his excellent officiating and to LSH for your part in an entertaining game. For Wirral it was great to see the lads playing again and enjoying the hospitality after the game.
