The Moss Lane pitch was in excellent condition and befitting for 2 good senior Colts teams. In the end the result came down to fine margins.

With the sun out Wirral kicked the game off and were immediately awarded an attacking scrum on the home 22. Early pressure kept the home defense honest as Wirral probed for openings finding their way deep into the opposition 22. Harry took a knock to the head and was immediately taken off for assessment. The resultant scrum saw Joel put through a narrow gap and untouched over the try line to put Wirral on the board and converted 0-7.
LSH began to grow in confidence and their free running full back gathered a deep kick and set off down the middle of the pitch making 40 meters. On 16 mins Wirral were alleged to have hands in the ruck to the right of the posts on their own 22 and from the resultant penalty the home side reduced the deficit 3-7. Wirral were reduced to 14 men after 17mins when a yellow was awarded for hands in the ruck within their own 22.
Following an attempt to get the ball wide early on 21 minutes the LSH full back intercepted on the halfway line and went in under the posts unopposed 10-7. Wirral were guilty at this point of attempting to rush the scoreboard and not remaining patient whilst in possession. With plenty of ball it seemed a forced off load or a dropped pass would keep punishing them and on 35minutes the home team were able to move the ball wide to the right flank for their winger to touch down, conversion missed 15-7. The last play of the 1st half saw LSH find field position that allowed their left winger to show good acceleration and a clean pair of heels to his opposite number. A desperate Wirral cover tackle couldn’t stop another try.
Halftime LSH 20 Wirral 7.
Wirral made changes at half time and came out in determined mood. On 4 mins following a good break by Mitch, Tom W was able to pick up and go over 20-12. Wirral were now dominant in the scrum but continued to make silly handling mistakes that would eventually prove decisive, not least when, with a 2 man overlap, a golden chance was wasted with a dropped ball 2 meters from the try line.
On 20 minutes Wirral were adjudged to be off side and the LSH opted to take a fine penalty from 40mtrs out in line with the right hand upright 23-12. Wirral were now pushing hard for field position and on 28mins Joel managed to find a gap and scamper over, with Ben adding the extras 23-19 10mins left, game on. LSH had other ideas and remained successful in snuffing out Wirral and managed to see the game out by kicking a 40th minute penalty to bring the final score to 26-19 in their favour.
I know the Wirral boys were really disappointed with the result, but there was no lack of effort and I’m sure the coaches will work hard with the squad not to force the scoreboard. it will take care of itself; boys must trust in the processes stay patient and play ‘in the moment’.
