Ten try Wirral see off Caldy

Wirral U13s hosted Caldy in their first home game of the season on Sunday. Despite heavy rain and high winds the day before, the conditions were dry and bright.

The game was played on Twickenham pitch on a day when Wirral RUFC was bursting at the seams with visitors from Hoylake, Oxton Parkonians, Whitchurch and Caldy.

With healthy squad numbers in both camps, the game was played over three thirds. Wirral welcomed back Jack L from injury, but were still without the services of Ethan R, Luke D, Will B and Luke N. James L also made his debut for the home team.

Wirral got off to a good start in the first third, with tries from outside centre Leon, and wing Harvey. It looked like Wirral were getting into their stride, but a try from Caldy and solid defence meant that the first section ended 2-1 to the hosts - with Caldy still very much in the game.

The home team regained momentum in the second third and effectively won the game during this period. Five unanswered tries from second row Charlie, Leon, Harvey, full back Callum and fly half Kai left the visitors chasing a large margin. Many speculated that Kai would be offered employment at Mothercare on Monday, such was his ability at selling dummies.

Caldy did not give up in the final third. The period saw three tries from Wirral, one from Leon and two from the imperious Callum - both players sealing their hat-tricks. Callum's second of the period was engineered by Starkers who was playing at number eight. Caldy had won the scrum ball from their own put in - but Starkers immediately put their backs under pressure forcing a handling error. The Wirralian fell on the ball to claim possession, and immediately popped it up to the rampaging full back who weaved his way over the whitewash.

However, the Caldymen found some extra gas in the tank. They scored three fine tries in the final ten minutes to quadruple their tally.

Final score: Wirral 10 - Caldy 4

Wirral Scorers: Leon (3), Harvey (2), Charlie, Callum (3), Kai
