Impressive Wirralians win at Macc

Match report by our special correspondent Tom Appleby.

An early start but a nice long journey to warm up was the starting point for a wonderful away day at Macclesfield.

At the outset, the teams lined up and could have been compared to "David and Goliath" – with Macclesfield fielding a couple of 6’+ players; but true to form, Wirral battled away to a very deserving victory.

An 18 man squad made the long journey each supported by a strong parental line and they all played their part.

Within four minutes of Kurt’s starting whistle, Leon crashed over for the first try.

Wirral dominated the early stages of the game with great endeavour and work rate. This spirit was rewarded with a second try by Leon on 8 minutes.

Whilst Macclesfield gained some possession following Wirral's strong start, more great work was to follow. The Wirralians won a turn over and fed Harvey who set off at pace towards the try line. With great strength and skill, he did well avoiding touch to place the ball for Wirral's third try without response.

Again, Macclesfield dug deep and fought back, rewarded 10 minutes before half time with their first try. This only led to another onslaught by the visitors who came fighting back with two more tries before the half-time whistle, sadly one of which was disallowed.

Half time score: Macclesfield 1 - 4 Wirral

Within a minute of the restart, the Macclesfield giant centre crashed over the whitewash having flattened at least five Wirral boys in the process. However once again, the Wirral boys pulled together and got stuck in, and Vinny with a superb dummy and sidestep broke through the line to score try number five.

Fly half Kai made some particularly impressive kicks during the second period to relieve pressure on the Wirral defence, and the boys continued to pile forward.

In the final 10 minutes, Wirral worked the ball forward to record three more tries with the substitutes bench being used to great effect.

The final score was 8 – 3, and very conclusive despite a very strong and competent opposition.

A good trip had by all, well done to coaching staff, parental line and of course the 18 man squad.

Try scorers : Leon (5) Harvey (1) Vinny (2)
