A long time coming.
Having fallen just short in festivals over the last few years the boys finally did what we all knew they were capable of.
Two teams went to Hoylake, Wildcats and Wolverines:
Wildcats on Pitch A won all four games against Waterloo, New Brighton, Ramsey and the hosts Hoylake who have improved significantly as the season has gone on, qualifying for the Cup final.
Wolverines on Pitch B looked to have a tough group and so it proved with the lads showing their resilience to force a 4-4 draw with the last play of the game having trailed 1-4 at half time to a very strong Waterloo team and fighting back from 0-2 at half time against Caldy to win 6-3. Big wins against LSH and Ramsey meant that they topped their group on points scored from Waterloo, thus setting up the all Wirral Cup final that we both hoped for and dreaded
Thankfully by virtue of both Waterloo teams qualifying for the Plate final we were able to shake hands on Wirral keeping the Cup and Waterloo keeping the Plate without the need for either club to have its own players face off against each other. Instead, we held a couple of exhibition matches between the respective teams who had yet to play. Wolverines stayed on Pitch B and put in a strong performance to win from the front against the Waterloo team from Pitch A. Wildcats enjoyed a tough game where the lead swapped hands twice before some strong Wirral rucking to turn the ball over and a couple of injuries to key Waterloo players gave the Wildcats breathing space. Both Wirral teams thereby finishing the day unbeaten and lifting the Cup together as a club!
