FANTASTIC IMPROVEMENT BY THE U9’S

“That was the best team we have played so far this season” so said one of their coaches.
Three defeats and a draw normally wouldn’t get that sort of comment but it was the manner in which the boys played and their improvement since the last game against Warrington that earned such remarks.

The team I will report on was; Matthew, Finn, George (M), George (R), Aiden, Josh, Myles, Scott and Ollie (S).

The game started at a blistering pace and Warrington battered through our defence to run in 2 quick tries.

Back in November the boys folded against such pressure but things have changed and bit by bit they clawed their way back through aggressive defence and attack.

Ollie Smith was the first to open our account with a strong, individual run down the wing, followed by Matthew with a weaving run splitting their defence.

Warrington eventually went ahead but Ollie evened the scores up with not so much a run but a “roll” as he seemed to roll around their players, eventually touching down. Warrington pushed on trying to win the game but came up against a “brick wall” of tackling from Wirral. The game finished 3 all, a fair result.

With that result the lad’s tails were up and the second match was eagerly anticipated.

Again, Warrington ran in 2 quick tries and again Wirral came back at them. Finn opened the scoring for us, was it a dummy or did he drop his shoulder to break through?

The next two tries were scored in similar fashion. Matthew got tackled, set the ball up, scrum half passed it along the line to Aiden who ran in to open for us.

The third followed quite quickly only this time the ball went straight out, from the set piece, to George M, on the wing who sped past the Warrington defence to run in try 3. Warrington kept probing and in the end tiredness showed on our part with a couple of mistakes being punished to finish the game 5-3 to Warrington.

All the boys can pat themselves on the back for a great effort, their tackling was superb, their running and offloading of the ball, excellent and the way we re-organised ourselves and kept our shape at the set pieces, fantastic.

And...... after watching those games, I need a stiff drink tonight!
