Junior Colts Miss Out in Eight Try Thriller

The Wirral Saints players set out from the off to play a more expansive game and were rewarded after 5 minutes when scrum half Ben Thomas charged down a Newcastle kick to follow up and score the opening try. Jack Jones converted. It took only 5 minutes for Newcastle to score their first try in the corner which wasn't converted. 7-5 The game was very evenly matched with both sides producing good hard open rugby which was a credit to both sides.
Josh Platt then finished off a fine individual run breaking through the Newcastle defence to score under the posts which was converted by Ben Thomas. 14-5. It was in the 20th minute when the same Newcastle winger crossed the Wirral Saints line in the corner which again was unconverted. 14-10 All action!! and the crowd of parents and supporters (~ 45) were well pleased with what they were watching. In the 25th minute Jack Johnson made a forward surging run into the Newcastle defence and forced his way over the line which was again converted by Jack Jones.
Newcastle came back again just before half time with a converted try which concluded what had been a great 1st half. H/T 21-17

In the 2nd half Wirral Saints failed to utilise what was becoming a strong wind in their favour. It seemed to be Newcastle upping their game whilst Wirral Saints were below their 1st half performance and inevitably Newcastle ran in 2 more tries only one of which was converted. Final Score Wirral Saints 21 Newcastle 29.
Both sides agreed that referee Clive Ludden deserved credit for his handling of the game and kept the play flowing. Again Wirral Saints showed what they are capable of and despite the lowly position we are seeing more positives every week.
