The full squad turned up at the Memorial Ground for this eagerly awaited return match after Wirral beat Caldy 34-15 in October.

At last Wirral had their full strength squad with 25 players turning up for this local derby. After concerns about the pitches the game got underway 10 minutes late on the back pitches.

Crisp conditions with clear blue sky saw Wirral immediately get right into the mix forcing Caldy back into their own 22.

After concerted pressure close to the Cady line Olly Jackson opened the scoring with a well worked forwards move by the right hand upright. Duly converted by Ben Brooks – 7-0.

Caldy came back into the game but an unfortunate injury to Charlie Dewey saw Caldy having to rearrange their backs to accommodate the loss of their Fly Half.

Again a period of good play saw Tom Parry released down the right wing and a lovely chip over their winger and a kind bounce saw Tom go over for our second try. 12-0. Some interesting back chat from a few Caldy players, ignored by Wirral, was an attempt to try and get into our minds. Well done to the lads for ignoring it and continuing to play open rugby. The best response possible.

After half time Ben Brooks kicked a penalty 15-0. A well worked move in Caldy’s twenty two saw Sandy Davidson go over in the 42nd minute and Ben Brooks kicked the conversion. 20-0.

Caldy came back strong and a great move down the left wing resulted in a try in the corner, which Luke Naylor (wearing tights for some reason!!) missed the conversion.

Wirral were fortunate to have a strong bench and after various substitutions we found ourselves in Caldy’s 22 again. A lovely move and a reverse pass from Kieran Brocken allowed Simon Flavell to get clear. Selling a lovely dummy to their full back, Luke Naylor, Simon scored under the posts, which was converted by Alex Griffiths. Final score 27-5.

Wirral Caldy encounters have always been great games to watch and it is a pity that Caldy were not at full strength. If they had been the score would have been much closer.

Wirral remain top and the outcome of the league is now in Wirral’s hands. Two games to go with the finish line in sight.
