A sunny Sunday morning saw the visit of a huge Caldy squad to Ocean Field as three Wirral teams emerged victorious against their local rivals.

Wirral Wasps

The team fielded one experienced campaigner, in the form of Dylan H, and three novices as David, Fraser and Jack all played their first games.

The boys played and won three games together with Dylan’s strength and David’s pace telling as they ran the ball in regularly, ably supported by some good tagging and ground making by Fraser and Jack with everyone touching down at some point.

The fourth game saw Dylan J make his debut as Jack was redeployed to help sure up the Warriors. The change in personnel made no difference to the outcome as Dylan J marked his debut with a try and the lads continued their great team work to ensure that Wasps finished the day with four wins out of four.

An honourable mention should go to the Caldy player, Anthony, who bravely shook off the effects of a knock on the head and played on.

Wirral Warriors

Warriors had a tougher start to their day as Alfie, Ben, Laurence and Harry “H” had to cope with strong Caldy sides. The boys worked hard and showed a great team ethic with Alfie and Harry “H” going over but in the end the team’s lack of experience and a few dropped balls cost them their first two matches.

The third game was much closer with good support from Laurence and great tagging from Alfie. Ben’s determination saw him cross the line twice and they were ultimately unlucky to lose by the odd try in five.

The last game saw the arrival of new blood as Jack stepped in to give Laurence a deserved rest and Ethan and Harry “H” swapped teams. Ethan’s strength and experience galvanised the team, with him and Jack picking up hat-tricks. Ben supported well and Alfie bagged a couple as they ran out 8-6 winners in a well contested match.

Wirral Wizards

Wizards comprised an experienced four of Harry Mac, Ethan, Haigh and Paddy.

Finer details are scant due to the absence of notes but the lads’ experience told as they tagged, passed and worked well together, pulling opposition players out of the line and creating gaps to run into. Each of the boys scored multiple tries to win their first three games.

For the final game Ethan swapped with Harry “H” who got to experience his first taste of victory as the Wizards continued to dominate and posted their fourth win.

The last victory gave Wirral u7’s a 9-3 winning record for the day and overall the performances highlighted the importance of experience and the advantage of running combined u6 and u7 sections in giving the kids the opportunity to play competitive matches much sooner. Saying that, special congratulations go to all those who played their first matches and did so well, particularly Harry “H” who got thrown straight into the team on his first day of rugby at Wirral.

Thankfully we weren’t asked to produce birth certificates or the Caldy coaches might have learned that in addition to fielding some genuinely big six year olds, we also had a few nifty five year olds running in tries!

The session finished with a mass game of bulldog as both groups of Wirral and Caldy kids took on their combined coaches in what started out more like a battle scene from Braveheart than anything from a coaching manual before one elusive Caldy lad restored his club’s honour by running through at least fifty taggers to emerge victorious.

Finally big thanks to Caldy for bringing so many kids over, the unfortunate downside of which was a shortage of sausages by the time the Wirral coaches packed up and got back to the clubhouse. Still, you can’t have everything!
