Coach Sarah took the Wirral Wasps:
Wirral Wasps team was made up of Alfie, Ethan, Jamie and Joel. They played fantastically on Sunday especially as the opposition were all true U7’s or year 2. Really impressive attitude and spirit from players and parents made for a fabulous morning.
Match 1: Caldy 6 Wirral 5 (Tries, Ethan 3, Alfie 1, Joel 1)
Closest game of the day and both sides used the ball well in attack. Good handling by Wirral meant they scored nearly every time they had possession. Jamie was unlucky to have been judged to have been in touch before touching down and kept his head up admirably. Joel showed elusive running skills and the future is bright for the U7’s next year.
Match 2: Caldy 4 Wirral 7 (tries: Ethan 4, Alfie 3)
Alfie was instrumental in turning possession back to Wirral by claiming the loose ball on a couple of occasions. Good teamwork and finishing from Ethan sealed a convincing win.
Match 3: Caldy 8 Wirral 6 (tries: Ethan 4, Alfie 1, Jamie 1)
Caldy were more dominant in this game than the score line suggests. The Wasps main downfall was passing the ball to the opposition, albeit when they were stood in an offside position. That is not meant as a criticism of the referee more just something we need to be aware of and can pick up in training. Ethan stood out again with his talent for reading the game and natural pace.
Coach John took the Wirral Welsh Dragons (so named by Dylan H) comprising Dylan H, Fraser, Owen and Oscar.
Match 1:
Good running rugby and close support from Wirral and pacey finishing by Caldy saw the teams level at half time before lapses in concentration and “unsympathetic” passing in the second half led to a lot of dropped balls which were seized on by Caldy who ran out victorious by a couple of tries.
Match 2:
The boys’ brilliant support work continued in the second match cycling the ball over every time they were tagged until each attack eventually produced a try. The match was hard fought but some inspirational fingertip tagging by Oscar and Fraser in particular led to the breakdown of a number of Caldy attacks and the turnover of the ball and the Dragons finished victorious.
Match 3:
Dragons lined up against the same Caldy team as they played in Match 2. The match played out in a similar way to the other games with Wirral’s hard work and relentless tagging and team play matching up well to Caldy’s pace and probably just shading the game despite lax scorekeeping by Dragons' coach!
Over the course of the three games all the boys got on the score sheet and made valuable contributions with Oscar's heroic tagging, Fraser's leadership of his defensive line, Dylan's strong running and Owen's support of the man with the ball all deserving a mention.
Coaches Graham, Rich and Alan reported a mixed bag of wins, draws and losses but all commented on how well their teams did particularly given the mix of ages in each team. Thanks to everyone who made the trip, you did yourselves proud and thanks to our hosts Caldy for a really enjoyable morning.
