Mixed 2nd/3rd Team Have Pre-season Warm Up

Mixed 2nd/3rd Team Have Pre-season Warm Up

Andrew Broadbent24 Aug - 19:55

The 16th August saw a fantastic display of community rugby at Ellesmere Port.

The hosts played Wirral in a competitive and spirited fixture ending in a Wirral win 47-29.
Ellesmere Port did not disappoint kicking off with a positive and committed side, bringing physicality and structure that made for a thrilling contest from start to finish.
To ensure all Wirral players had the opportunity to take the field, the game was played in four quarters. This format allowed the Wirral coaching team to rotate the squad and showcase the depth of talent across both the 2nd and 3rd XVs. Ellesmere Port’s defence was resolute throughout, consistently challenging our attacking phases and slowing our momentum. Credit to Ellesmere Port for their discipline and determination they made us earn every inch.
From a coaching perspective, it was incredibly encouraging to see so many Wirral players involved. The new 2nd XV management team had the chance to witness our youth and senior players shine against a tough, old-school side. We kept our shape, communicated well, and executed set pieces with confidence even when changing players around so much, this is great news! Lineouts and scrums were led by experienced players who are helping shape the future of the club and these are again becoming one of our strengths for the coming season.
Sy Hopkins shared his thoughts:
“We have some more top talent progressing through the Wirral pathway and it’s exciting to see. Plus, a lot of Senior players still pushing for a 2nd XV slot. This is what community rugby is all about offering opportunities to these committed lads from 18 to 35 (ok maybe 40!).”
A brilliant day of rugby and a strong sign that Wirral’s strength in depth continues to grow.
