Wirral 3’s v Liverpool Collegiate 2’s Saturday 7th March

WIRRAL 45 LIVERPOOL COLLEGIATE 5
Another trip out on the minibus for the 3s saw another comfortable win. After the disappointment of having 3 of the last 4 fixtures conceded by the opposition, it was great to have a game and credit to Collegiate for getting a team out from amongst their second team regulars and their vets. They stuck to their task manfully against a clearly superior Wirral side containing three different 'dads and lads' combinations, some Colts, some new players to the club and the returning Andy Charvill.
On the field, Logan Bell had his strongest game at all-age level, Martin Touhey continues to impress, and Ollie Williams showed why he will be a class player as he gets more experience. Best spectacle must go to Dan Ludbrook for his ability to make the slope at Collegiate's far pitch look like Everest in a sandpit when he had a breakaway in the first half and was caught by one of the Collegiate veteran forwards. Fair play to Dan for then producing an offload for Ollie to score, though.
Free week next week and then a big one against Oldershaw 21 March

Wirral Junior Colts v Sandbach -Sunday 8th March

WIRRAL COLTS 46 SANDBACH 24
Wirral secure second in penultimate league game of the season
Wirral headed to Sandbach in their final away day of the league season with their eyes firmly set on securing second place after a tough loss last time out. A great display from Wirral in the first half with tries from Tom Leach, George Stuart and Aled Vickers made sure they were ahead at the break. 14-17 as they looked to head down the hill in the second half.
The second half started with a strong defensive display as Wirral were able to force Sandbach back into their own half before an interception from Jacob Maddocks saw him dot down for the first try of the second half. A brace of tries from Ethan Chan down the wing took Wirral further into the lead before Sandbach mounted an attack to try and pull them back into the game. The last act of the game saw Teddy Groves breaking down the blindside after another defensive display and some loose ball to go in down the touchline to score Wirral’s seventh try of the afternoon before Kai Jackson converted the kick in off the far upright to finish the game. Sandbach 24-46 Wirral.
Next week sees the final home game of the league season for the Junior colts as they take on Stockport.

Wirral Senior Colts (Gulls) v – Sandbach Sunday 8th March
*Numbers prove the difference in second half!*
On Sunday Wirral Gulls took on a strong Sandbach outfit, still looking for that allusive first win in Conference C League. As they have become accustomed to, the Gulls started the match with only a bare 15 which included a first start of the season for TJ Hodgson Evans.
The Gulls started very well and matched the Sandbach side throughout a very competitive first half. Even dealing with Sandbach’s version of the “bomb squad” midway through the half after making 5 substitutions- The Gulls could only dream!!!
The half time score saw Sandbach take a narrow 12-10 lead going into the second half, and the talk at half time was for the Gulls to continue to try and frustrate, and pin Sandbach back into their own half.
Unfortunately, that didn’t quite transpire as hoped, and a very strong Sandbach start, marred with some injuries to the Gulls side- saw Sandbach run away with the game. A highlight for the Gulls though, was a length of the pitch try from Sam Weir!
The Gulls will take huge belief from their first half performance going into the final league game next week away at Sedgley Park and will then look to build to the Bowl Semi Final back at home in two weeks’ time!

Wirral Ladies v Aspull Ladies

Wirral Ladies 0 – 40 Aspull Ladies
Wirral Ladies marked a historic moment on Sunday as captain Sam Ollie earned her 50th cap for the club — the first player in the history of the women’s team to reach this milestone.
Leading from the front once again, Ollie took to the field against league leaders Aspull in what proved to be a tough afternoon for the home side.
Aspull showed exactly why they sit at the top of the table, capitalising on a rare defensive off day from Wirral. Despite moments of strong attacking play and determined effort throughout the squad, Wirral struggled to contain Aspull’s pace and organisation. The visitors crossed the line six times during the match, successfully converting four of their tries to build a commanding scoreline.
While the result was disappointing, the Wirral squad will take valuable lessons from the game. The team know there is work to do, particularly in tightening up defensively, but the attitude within the camp remains positive and focused.
With a two-week break before their next fixture, Wirral will return to training determined to put things right as they prepare for an important home derby against Oldershaw on Sunday 22nd March.
The team would love to see a big crowd down to support them for what promises to be a fantastic local derby and a great day of rugby.
