March is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Clatterbridge Cancer Charity will be doing a bucket collection at our game against Long Eaton on 21 March. Clatterbridge Cancer Charity raises vital funds to support patients and families across Wirral, Liverpool, Cheshire and beyond. Community collections like these play an important role in helping them continue their life-saving work. It would be great if you could bring a little extra cash with you to the game and support this important Charity.
Match Reports
Wirral 2s v Sedgley Park - Saturday 14th March
Wirral 2nd XV delivered a composed and hard-fought performance away at Sedgley Park, securing an impressive 27–24 victory against a physically dominant home side.
From the outset, Wirral imposed themselves across the park, with control in both possession and territory. The standout platform came from the scrum, where the pack produced a huge shift against a bigger Sedgley unit. Their dominance at set piece laid the foundation for much of Wirral’s attacking play, and real credit must go to the forwards for sustaining that intensity throughout the match.
While there were moments of lapse and the odd mishap and spells of lost concentration, Wirral consistently showed resilience and composure to regain control. Each time Sedgley threatened, the response was measured and determined, reflecting just how far this group has progressed on their Viking journey.
The game remained tightly contested, but Wirral’s cohesion and belief ultimately proved the difference, edging a well-earned 27–24 win on the road.
A particular highlight was the inclusion of three Colts in the squad, whose contributions underlined the strength and progression of the Wirral pathway. Their involvement is not only a testament to the club’s development system, but also a clear signal of the exciting future being built within the squad. MoM to Olli Williams (Colt) plying at 15 simply outstanding performance
Junior Colts v Stockport – Sunday 15th March
Wirral see league season out in style with victory over Stockport
Wirral 39 - 14 Stockport
The day started off in glorious sunshine as Stockport pulled up at the memorial ground. The weather wasn’t to hold however as strong winds and rain swept over the field as the game kicked off it was going to make for an interesting afternoon of rugby. With Wirral attacking into the weather in the first half they were able to pull ahead with a slight lead as Max Dyer, Oliver Bradley and Kai Jackson went over the white wash to make the score 17-14 at half time.
The second half was very much a one-sided game as Wirral pinned Stockport into the corners taking full advantage of the wind. Max Dyer went over the line again to secure his brace in the corner and George Wood dotted down under the posts to take the game out of sight. Tries from Alfie Pulford down the left-hand side and a well-executed kick chase from Tom Leach saw the game end 39-14 to Wirral as they finish the league in second.
The main aim of the game was to prepare for this weekend’s fixture against Chester which will see the top two teams of the league go head-to-head for a place in the Cheshire Cup Final.
Senior Colts (Gulls) v Sedgley Park – Sunday 15th March
Gulls make it to the end!
The Gulls finally made it to the end of the Conference C League unfortunately suffering another defeat away at Sedgley Park.
In what has been a very tough season results wise; placed in a league top high for the squad, the Gulls never say die attitude saw them put in another admiral performance with only 14 players.
The coaches and parents cannot fault the effort of the core group of lads who have shown up week in week out and given their all. The tough weeks they have endured will serve them well once they make the step up into Senior rugby.
Next week the Gulls host Macc in the bowl semi-final, looking to find a positive result and extend their time as an age group with a win that will take them into a Cheshire bowl final!
