Wirral 2s v – Macclesfield (Macc) Saturday 21st March
Wirral 2nd XV 44 – 22 Macclesfield
In a display of grit and traditional "Viking" spirit, Wirral 2nd XV overcame a sluggish opening to secure a dominant 44-22 victory over Macclesfield.
The match began with Wirral looking uncharacteristically off the pace. Macclesfield took full advantage of the hosts' slow start, finding gaps in the defensive line and putting Wirral on the back foot early. For the first quarter, it seemed the visitors might run away with the contest as Wirral struggled to find their rhythm.
However, the tide turned through sheer force of will. Led by clinical leadership on the pitch, Wirral began to settle. The pack started winning the collisions, and that trademark Viking determination became evident in every ruck and carry. Once the momentum shifted, the floodgates opened.
Wirral’s turnaround was powered by a clinical set-piece and a backline that finally found its timing. What started as a nervy encounter transformed into a showcase of power and fitness. By the final whistle, Wirral had crossed the whitewash multiple times, leaving Macclesfield with no answer to their relentless second-half pressure.
A slow start may have given Macclesfield hope, but Wirral’s resilience ensured a comprehensive and well-deserved bonus-point win.
Man of the match Matty Richards showing his skill set and dominance all round.

Wirral 3s v Oldershaw 1a - Saturday 21st March
Oldershaw 1st XV 19-14 Wirral 3rd XV
The 3s travelled to face Oldershaw's first team in a top-of-the-table clash on Saturday. Injuries and unavailability had ravaged the team but somehow, we still managed to field 19 players in the squad, including seven over 50s. The Oldershaw club were blessed with a warm, sunny day for their family day, with a large crowd gathering to watch the match, cramming Belvedere Road.
If Oldershaw were expecting a procession towards the Div4 League title, they were given a rude awakening by the ferocity of the Wirral tackling and hard running early doors. Having survived early pressure on our own line, Wirral scored a breakaway try to lead 0-7. Even though we were pegged back to 7-7 at half time, Wirral scored first after the break (7-14). After a dubious awarded try brought it back to 12-14, a late try to Oldershaw eventually gave them the victory 19-14 as Wirral's tired bodies finally gave out.
Fantastic performance all round by the 3s. Congratulations to Oldershaw who are now mathematically assured of the league title if they complete their remaining fixtures.

Under 14’s Cheshire Cup Semi Final v Lymm Sunday 22nd March
Wirral U14 38 v Lymm U14 14
Wirral went into our Cheshire Cup semi-final against a very strong Lymm side and the only team to beat us this season.
The game started as expected with Lymm dominating possession through their forwards. The first 10 minutes Lymm dominated play and although the game was played in the middle 3rd Wirral worked hard and defended relentlessly. We also lost Eric, our tough 2nd row within 10 minutes to injury.
However, once we settled into our game plan and played the phases Wirral started to play the way we can with some constructive progress and flowing backs attacking.
At the break Wirral 12 v Lymm 7 The second half had Wirral playing with the slight incline and was a similar start to the first half with Lymm strong and controlling the game through their forwards. However, it didn’t take Wirral long to get back into our formation with some brilliant attacking from our forwards. Containing their forwards this allowed our back to show our strength when running with the ball. Sadly, we lost our inside centre, Leo, early into the second half but his replacement Alfie joined the back line and immediately assisted for Matty’s 1st of 3 tries in the second half.

Junior Colts v Chester - Sunday 22nd March
Wirral Junior Colts fall at the (semi) final hurdle as Chester take the win.
Sunday saw the final competitive game of the season for the Junior Colts as they looked to try and secure a place in the final of the Cheshire Cup. The only thing that stood in their way was a well drilled and talented Chester side.
The first half started with Chester taking a convincing lead as they crossed the try line 7 times to make the half time score 47-12 with Wirral tries from Jacob Maddocks and George Wood.
The second half was a similar story but it started more positively with Maddocks crossing the white wash again for his 2nd of the match. Chester then proceeded to gather more momentum as they clocked another 3 tries in the second half which meant the game finished 66-19.
This weekend sees the Junior colts on tour as they head north to Edinburgh as they take on Dunfermline. This tour follows on from a great season as the Junior colts finished 1st in the Preliminary A League and second in the Conference A League and have done themselves proud showing what they have to offer.

Senior Colts (Gulls) v Macclesfield (Macc) – Sunday 22nd March
Gulls come up just short in Bowl Semi Final…
For once, the Gulls could boast a full-strength squad for the visit of Macclesfield in the Cheshire cup semi-final, looking to finish the season on a high by booking a place in the final.
The first half was a tight affair with Macc taking an early 3-0 lead with a penalty kick. But the Gulls struck back through a well worked try which was converted to take a 7-3 lead into the second half.
The second half started badly when a misplaced pass popped up nicely for Macc who ran in to go ahead 10-7, and then added a further penalty to lead 13-7.
But the gulls hit back scoring out wide to reduce the deficit to 13-12.
However, they gave up some easy territory but not gathering the kick off and moments later, Macc scored again to lead 18-12.
Despite throwing the kitchen sink at the Macc defence, the Gulls couldn’t get over the line and the final whistle blew- ending the Gulls season, as well as their time together as a group.
The coaching team and parents are so proud of the lads for their efforts over the lads two seasons. From being two struggling age groups, coming together as one over the course of the summer- they managed to win the league and cup double in their first season, and this year have competed in large parts of games against some of the top teams locally.
There are certainly high hopes for this group of players carrying on their journeys into senior rugby!

Wirral Ladies v Oldershaw Ladies – Sunday 22nd March
Wirral Ladies produced a performance full of heart and determination despite a 0–52 defeat to Oldershaw, in a score line that ultimately failed to reflect the effort and resilience shown throughout the match.
From the opening whistle, Wirral faced a formidable challenge against an Oldershaw side bolstered by players with experience from leagues three tiers above. That gulf in experience and physicality was evident at times, with Oldershaw able to capitalise on key moments and turn pressure into points. However, the hosts never allowed their heads to drop, continuing to battle for every ball and showing real grit in defence.
There were plenty of positives for Wirral to take from the game. Their defensive structure improved as the match went on, with several strong individual tackles and better organisation limiting further damage in the latter stages. In attack, there were glimpses of promise too, with phases of play that demonstrated growing confidence and cohesion.
While Oldershaw’s quality and depth proved decisive on the day, it will be interesting to see whether they are able to retain a squad featuring players from significantly higher leagues heading into next season.
For Wirral, the focus remains firmly on the bigger picture. Built on grassroots and development-level rugby, this is a side very much in the making. Performances like this, against strong opposition, are all part of the journey—and ones that will only make the team stronger in the long run.
Despite the result, Wirral Ladies can take pride in their effort and look ahead with confidence as they continue to build for the future
