Match Reports

DRONFIELD 19 WIRRAL 1s 35
Snippet from Rich McNeil’s report - This was Wirral’s first visit to Dronfield, who have been promoted into the league. Wirral made changes from last week; HARRY HAWLEY came into the second row in place of JAMES REEVE, BEN BROOKS in for ALFIE KIMPTON, RHYS JAMES in at fly half for FRASER HANCOX, RAFAEL VAN OSSELEAR in for WILL TOMLINSON. On the subs bench was JOSEF HEALEY, JOE FURY, CONNOR MOORE, DAN HARVEY and GARETH RICHARDS.

Wirral drop the ball from kick off giving Dronfield the opportunity to kick to the corner where from a 5m line out the tall second row secured the ball and the home team were able to bundle their way over the line to score 10m from the corner flag, the conversion was made, 7-0 (4 mins). Wirral replied quickly, HAYDEN LONG forcing his way over under the posts, duly converted by RHYS JAMES to leave the scores level at 7-7 (8 mins). From another 5m line out Dronfield used the first technique as for their first try to score again wideout but the conversion was missed, 12-7 (15 mins). Three minutes later, RHYS JAMES broke through in mid field to eventually pass inside to TOM AKEHURST who had a run in to score under the posts again converted by RHYS JAMES, 12-14. Wirral survived a period down to 14-men after a yellow card but soon after, Dronfield spread the ball along the line allowing the home side's right winger to score in the corner, well converted to give Dronfield a 19-14 lead at half time.

The second half starts with a long kick by BEN BROOKS to put Wirral on the attack and from possession in the home 25, pressure resulted in TOM AKEHURST crossing for his second try, again converted by RHYS JAMES to give Wirral the lead again, 19-21 (46 mins). Four minutes later with Wirral taking command down in the Dronfield 20m area, attacking the whitewash ended with CONNOR MOORE touching down for the try bonus point and again converted by RHYS to ease the lead out to 19-28 (62 mins).

Much as Dronfield attacked they were being repelled by strong Wirral tackling as any kick from the home side was being repelled by long kicks downfield from RHYS and BEN. On 64 mins with the home side attacking, there was an interception by WILL MORRIS who had a run in from 30m to score under the posts, again converted by RHYS JAMES who had converted all the tries to extend the Wirral lead to 19-35, meaning the home side would need to score 3 tries to win the game.

A good result for Wirral against a strong Derbyshire team, which leaves Wirral unbeaten before travelling to Blackburn next week, who lost to Bowdon on Saturday. Currently Wirral have the best defensive record in the league,

? WIRRAL 2nd XV VIKINGS vs FYLDE 2nd XV

Wirral travelled with a strong squad, a blend of Vikings core and first team players pushing hard for selection, making this a proper contest from the first whistle.

The match started brightly for the visitors, with Finn Bell going over under the posts, set up by a powerful, athletic surge from Sam Vickers. Sadly missed on camera as I forgot to hit record! ?, but the impact on the field was crystal clear.

From there it became a genuine game of two halves. Fylde a seasoned National League side hit back hard, finding their rhythm and running in scores of their own. What followed was an absolute dogfight, end to end, neither side yielding easily. As coaches, we couldn’t be prouder of the grit, determination and heart this group showed from start to finish.

That said, we know where we fell short a handful of basic errors, discipline at the ruck, getting caught in 2v1 situations and a couple of costly handling slips ultimately proved the difference.

Final score: Fylde 35 – 33 Wirral. A narrow loss, but one that stings all the same.

It’s worth remembering: we’re up against established National League outfits teams built and conditioned for this level week in, week out. Yet the signs are unmistakable, our Vikings are developing and this season the progress is happening faster than before. We are ready for this campaign.

The positives were everywhere:
• Scrum dominance against a much heavier Fylde pack, our set piece was outstanding, holding and driving them back throughout
•Chris Hughes just brilliant. Played the full 80 minutes in the front row and was superb every single minute
•Will Tomlinson on the wing with his deceptive strength, incredible work-rate and so hungry for work. Time and again he held up much larger opponents — second rows and number eights at kickoffs, allowing us to win back possession immediately. His pace and constant threat stretched Fylde’s defensive line every time he touched the ball a standout performance.
This group is building something real. Onwards and upwards
