MATCH REPORTS
Wirral 2nd XV vs Sale FC 2nd XV
Score: Wirral 22 – 27 Sale FC
Wirral came out of the blocks all guns blazing, immediately taking the game deep into Sale territory and well inside their 22 and this despite a ferocious wind blowing directly against us. The message from the start was clear, we were here to compete, and compete hard. Our forward pack was magnificent. From the first scrum to the last, we annihilated their set piece. The scrum was completely dominant, and our mauls drove with power and purpose repeatedly marching a big, physical Sale pack backwards. We created at least four or five against the head winds through forward pressure alone, standing tall against a side that has historically had the edge over us physically.
The backs fought with equal passion. Up against a well-established, slick Sale backline, our lads defended ferociously, maintained excellent shape and showed real agility and ambition exactly what we've been working on in our player-led sessions this past week. The commitment across the park was outstanding.
Where We Fell Short:
As the game settled, Sale's experience began to show. A few Wirral clinical errors handling slips and kicks that weren't necessary kept the scoreboard ticking over in their favour along with one or two missed managed areas, when we had them under pressure. These moments made the final score look more comfortable for them than it actually was, in truth, this was a game played on a knife-edge throughout.
Head Coach's Thoughts
"I am immensely proud of this group. Last season, the gap between these two sides was far wider today we were right in the mix until the final whistle. That is progress you can see and feel. We know we can tighten up on those small mistakes, be more clinical in the red zone, and manage the ball better under pressure. That's the next step. However, we cannot keep last season as an excuse. WE must progress at pace. No pause in battle now!!
Execute Execute Execute
Wirral 3s 24-73 Newton Le Willows 1s
The 3s were up against the side relegated from Div3 last season - Newton Le Willows first team. Newton is undergoing somewhat of a rebuild after sliding down the leagues and presented a powerful opponent for a third team to encounter. After a brutal opening period where Newton's strong running and impressive backs moves resulted in multiple early tries, Wirral fought their way into competing and drew the second half. Shout out to the Hodson’s, who had Tim Senior, Timothy Junior and Jack all on the pitch together - a reminder of what Wirral 3s is about, albeit we hope to be more successful on the scoreboard in next week's league-cup double header against Prenton 2s.
Senior Colts v Wilmslow
Wilmslow 54 - 31 Wirral
Wirral went down to a strong Wilmslow side on the day, but there was plenty to be proud of in a 70-minute shift.
The squad arrived just 16 strong, while Wilmslow had the bench to rotate. For long spells it didn't show. The Wirral forwards dominated up front, Kai controlled the game from the base of the pack, and Damo finally found his voice and got stuck into organising the lads. There were strong plays on both sides of the ball, with some good attacking rugby and committed defensive work.
The match turned in the final quarter. A concussion around the 50-minute mark left Wirral with no replacements, and by the 55-minute mark tired legs were starting to tell. Defensive lapses and too many offsides then let Wilmslow pull away on the scoreboard.
Defensive line discipline is the clear thing to work on in training, but the effort, the forward dominance and the way the lads stuck at it for the full 70 are real positives to build on.
Wirral Ladies v Fleetwood Ladies
Fleetwood 24 - 0 Wirral
A good performance by an under strength Wirral side away at Fleetwood. Well done to those that travelled.
