Senior Rugby update
Wow, what a day. WAGS, ex-players, away supporters and the usual suspects enjoyed
a fantastic pre match carvery, served by Rob and his staff. They were the served a feast
on the pitch with an excellent and committed performance by our first team. A much
deserved and needed 32-25 victory was all the supporting faithful could wish for. The
boys deserved their ovation and the end of the game and the sponsored barrel tasted
even better than normal.
A massive shout out to Christie Harvey and Mark Mccall, who organised their events
and made sure the club was buzzing and back to its rugby best. It was a pleasure to
see so many WAGS and ex-players enjoying the occasion, some a bit more than
others.
Our 2`s travelled to Preston Grasshoppers losing 49-18, but another strong effort from a
very young side. The 3s entertained Hope Valley and won 38-22 taking them off the
bottom of the league. After the game a couple of the lads sent messages, these
epitomise the club and its players:
“MINT that was today, lads. Thanks all for being rockstars, especially when we kept them out for 5 minutes in our line. Dead chuffed to be part of this team. Please, please, keep committing to as many games as you can. Every one of you adds strength and value when you put the shirt on. UP THE WILLIES!”
Gareth “Doc” Jones.
“We might not get the desired numbers down at the moment, but as a former 3rd team captain I can say with some confidence that the team spirit and togetherness has never been so good. It's been an honour and pleasure to play the last few weeks gents.
... And finally got a win today that's been thoroughly deserved! See you all next week! ”
Phil “The Power” Tolliday
Hope Valley only turned up with 11 players, but guess what? Yes, we lent them some
players to make the game a great contest and experience for all the lads from both
clubs.
Three cheers to all the players and coaches involved.
Good luck to all the teams and players this weekend, let get down and support the boys
and a big thank you to all our supporters who make a massive effort to travel to the
away games.
Ladies Rugby Update
After a few weeks of no games through weather cancelation, we are entertaining
Ormskirk ladies this week, with a 2pm kick off. Big thankyou to Grace Baird, who
continues to captain the Ladies and encourage more involvement from new players.
Good luck on Sunday and let’s get another big win and please come down to the club to
support our Warriors team.
Junior Rugby Update
Our Senior Colts have a massive game this Sunday against Caldy RFC at the Memorial
Ground, the ¼ Final of the senior cup, so winner takes all and moves onto the Semi
Final. Only a couple of weeks ago the lads put on a great performance in the League,
however a string Caldy SC`s will be looking to avenge their close defeat.
The game kicks off at 2pm, so please get down and support the lads in their last game
before the Xmas break.
Junior Colts v Bolton JC`s
A bright, crisp December afternoon saw Wirral Junior Colts take to the field against their Bolton counterparts. The previous encounter at Bolton had been a ‘lively’ affair, which ended in a 7-19 win for Wirral. The referee for the day was Harry Hopwood.
The home squad was 18 strong, with late withdrawals due to injury from Sturzy and Wright. Wirral were also still missing the impact and experience of O’Loughlin, Wilson, Nowell, Rumsby, and Holsgrove. The mix of players available would also require a number of forwards to join the backs for this encounter.
The match started with a fizz for the Wirralians, with No. 8 Charlie Ward, dotting down for the first try within the first minute – scrum-half Crockford was unable to add the extras.
15 minutes passed, with the home side dominating possession and collisions – Jenkins, McCarthy-Edwards, Gregory, Ward, and Levene all making significant dents in the visitors’ defence. Open-side flanker Josh Gregory went over for the second try, which was converted (despite slipping on his backside) by Crockford.
Ward fell awkwardly from a lineout catch and was replaced by Tahana. Charie Smith was also replacedwith new recruit, Charlie Wood.
Eight minutes later, Wood was driven over for his debut try in Wirral colours. Crockford teased the crowd by deliberately bouncing the ball over the crossbar for his second conversion of the day.
Wirral appeared to ease off the gas with half-time approaching, allowing Bolton to score just before the break. Converted. 19-7 HT.
Two minutes into the second half, Wirral flanker Sam Stafford-Heymans – playing on the wing – scored in the corner. Unconverted. Unfortunately, 2 minutes later Stafford-Heymans left the field due to injury – Charlie Smith on.
Bolton hit back 5 minutes later with a converted try. 24-14.
Wirral then stepped up several gears and dominated the remainder of the game.
Three tries followed from Will Bell, and one each from Kenzie, Luke, and Jim. With Crockford converting four of the six. Final score, Wirral 62 Bolton 14.
Match report Mr Lee Vickers, a very relieved Welshman to see the return of the
mercurial Warren Gatland, luckily they got their before England!!
Club
A fantastic week at the club and we are improving all the time on the pitch, the seniors
are getting there, the Ladies continue to develop, the Touch Rugby is going from
strength to strength and the M&J`s section is absolutely buzzing. The club is returning
to the old ways at the weekend and it`s great to see so many familiar faces supporting
us.
A big thankyou to Sophie and the bar staff, who have had a very busy few months, I
regularly get compliments about the staff and they thoroughly deserve it.
Saturday sees the return of “Stars in their Eyes” with some outstanding performances
expected. The entertainment will commence after the England v France World Cup ¼
Final. So, watch the rugby, watch the football and then some famous bands/singers.
Finally, some sad news, Sue Shields passed away on Sunday, loving wife of club
legend Jim Shields and mother to Rob and Bethan. The club sends its sincere
condolences the family and will hopefully sees you all soon, RIP Sue xx
Kind regards
