Senior Rugby Update
Saturday sees us entertain Ilkley in the Papa Johns Shield, after their victory against
Kendal, it now becomes a winner takes all game, to see who moves into the semi-final
of the competition. There is a pre match lunch, with over 70 attending, once again a
massive thank you to the rugby section for all their efforts.
Please get down to the club and after 8 weeks since our last 1st team home game we
must be all chomping at the bit to get down and support the lads. COYW.
Junior Rugby Update
Both our amazing Senior Colts and Junior Colts are in Cheshire Cup Finals this Sunday,
see above for information. Both being in the top Cheshire Finals, is unprecedented and
an amazing achievement. A massive shout out to all involved. COYW.
If you can get to the games, please make every effort to support our boys, in what has
been excellent seasons for them both. It would be great if they can bring the trophy
home, but we are all proud of their achievements and I wish them all the very best of
luck.
U12s @ Kirby Lonsdale
The U12’s venture to Kirby Lonsdale for their festival yesterday. They played some of
their best rugby to date, and collectively the best team work as well.
Not that we’re keeping score, but they played 4 and won 4 against 4 very strong sides,
Kirby Lonsdale, Penrith, Eccles and Durham.
All the boys where on a high with what they achieved and many core values ticked off in
the process.
Ben Campbell (Head Coach)
A fantastic achievement and well done to all involved.
U14`s tour of IOM
This weekend the U14 Expeditionary Force of 25 players and 29 parents/supporters
travelled to the Isle of Man to face the very best the island had to offer.
Basing ourselves in Ramsey allowed the club to make strong links with Ramsey Rugby
Club and opening future corridors for further fixtures.
Saturday saw Wirral take on the finest U14 talent the island had to offer a Sale Sharks
DPP select XV. Wirral started the game on the front foot with the forwards getting the
upper hand both at the breakdown and set piece. This then combined with some
exceptional attacking intelligence by Wirral’s backs saw them take an early lead.
Inevitably, against strong opposition they came right back into the game. However, the
collective spirit and the togetherness that comes from being on tour meant that the
visitors hunger in the tackle was insatiable. Wirral came out winners 24-17.
After a second night of tour fun and festivities our second match pitched Wirral against
our hosts Ramsey RUFC. Even though the game was competitive from the first whistle
Wirral U14 combination of confidence and skill saw them come away with a 31-0 win
and an unbeaten tour record.
We all know touring is much more than just rugby. The memories made and the
friendships forged is what going on tour is all about. Ramsey RUFC were magnificent
hosts, and we are delighted to return the favour so soon when their U15’s visit this
weekend. Two clubs with similar values now have strong connections for players on
both sides of the water to enjoy for many years to come.
Tom
U14 Head Coach
I attended the tour and can only say how proud I was to be a Wirralian, the whole
weekend was an advert for Wirral M&J`s coaches, players and parents.
Senior Cricket update
The cricket season is upon us again with our 1s entertaining Wilmslow, our 2s at Port
Sunlight and 3s hosting Barnton. All the very best for another successful season and
good luck to all our teams.
Please get down to the club to support the boys and enjoy a quality and entertaining
standard of cricket, now being played at the Memorial Ground.
Club Update
Friday sees the funeral of Ex President and club legend Mr Dudley Lewis, for me it will
be a massive celebration of a remarkable roller coaster of a life. I started at the club as
a 16-year-old and two of the first people I met where Geoff Dean and Dudley Lewis,
they were Wirralians through and through and made me feel very welcome. We lost
Geoff early and now he has been joined by his partner in crime in the rugby heaven’s. I
am sure they will be selecting the best Wirral team as I write this.
Dudley was renowned for his antics, his hatred of anything not Wirral and his Guinness
drinking, I will leave those thoughts and memories to all who have been with him at the
club.
I will never forget his laugh, his smile, his Khaki trousers, his holey Wirral jumpers, his
humour, his anger, but most of all his absolute passion for the club.
Nicki has told me that everybody is welcome to come and join the family at the
Crematorium in Blacon at 1.20pm and the club from 3.00pm to celebrate the life of the
Wirral Legend.
We all as a club send our sincerest condolences to Dudley’s family and friends, and our
hearts will be with Jean and Nicki on the day. RIP Mr Dudley Lewis.
Kind regards
