Wirral Tigers Touch Rugby Update
What have the Tigers been up to, you may ask. Well, we are going from strength
to strength and slowly but surely drawing in other teams from around the Wirral
to take up the game and play us. Teams in the bag so far are Caldy, Port
Sunlight and last Monday Old Anselmians. We are working on Hoylake,
Oldershaw and Parkonians.
This week we hosted the LCRTL league at the club for the second time with
great success despite the rain trying to dampen the occasion. Five teams took
part including Liverpool Otters, Liverpool Tritons, Caldy Cobras and Chester
Centurions. All teams are of the opinion that Wirral is the friendliest and
welcoming club on the circuit. This is due to great support by the club and thanks
to Andy, Bev, and their team. and not forgetting Rob for the catering. Other
teams are most impressed with the grounds and pitches provided and we are the
only club with dedicated touch rugby pitches. Big thanks to Vando and his ground
staff.
Now if we could ensure that the touch rugby pitches are not used as training
pictures by everybody, that would be even better, and white lines would also
help. So, what about the Tigers themselves and how are we performing. It’s a big
transition from contact rugby to touch rugby and old habits are hard to shake off.
Contact players are great ball handlers and can pass over a distance unlike most
touch players at this level. This is a great advantage, but we lose out on our
ability to move the opposition around to create space and get the ball over the
line. We arrive at their try line and are a bit of a loss of what to do next. However,
having said all that we are doing well and are improving with each game. Add to
all this our policy of not having an A Team of the best players, we insist on
putting as many players on the pitch as we can so everybody regardless of skill
gets to join in.
So, in short, we are getting better, and more wins will be along in time. Big
thanks to all the Tigers, you are doing a great job in playing and supporting the
club.

Let`s have another great week at the club and look forward to some better weather.
