Rugby Update
No rugby at the club last weekend, once again the wet weather caused havoc with the pitches.
This week sees our 1st XV travelling to Northwich looking to cement 4th place and we welcome both Caldy and Hoylake rugby clubs to the Memorial Ground. Caldy 2s are
unbeaten for over 6 years, so a big match on for our 2s, please get down and support
the lads in what will be a monumental effort to try and beat the unbeatable.
Wirral Warriors v Aspull
On Sunday Wirral Warriors had their first away game against Aspull. Unfortunately, we were travelling light on numbers due to various injures but still determined to play a great game of rugby. The pitch … was something to be desired, little grass and lots of mud, ankle deep, we didn’t know if we there to play rugby or training for a Tough Mudder. However, the ref said the pitch was playable if we wanted to play, of course we wanted to play!
So, the game of stuck in the mud commenced, we kicked to them, and wall of warriors stormed up the pitch the forwards making big hits. Aspull couldn’t get through the wall they had to go round it and they did they got 2 tries going up the left wing.
Heads up we went again, we then had our only injury of the game, Alice made a massive hit which resulted in being sandwiched between the mud and an Aspull player, leaving us concerned about her back and neck.
Aspull matched our numbers, we are now down to 13 aside, we continued to play well, Becky as fullback directing us. Unfortunately, Aspull scored a further two tries. We were then down another player, the weather was not favourable to our asthmatics with one player needing her inhaler and time to recover, we called half time slightly early.
The second half we played like a well-oiled machine, forwards carrying the ball forward
playing the long game making ground with every taxi, Lissa then made excellent line break and then tackled but a cheeky Aspull player flew in from the side- penalty to us. A quick tap and go from Grace and she was off charging down the pitch, not one, not two but 6 Aspull players were drawn in to get Grace down all while she was getting closer to the try line, gaps were made spotted by speedy number 9 Steph. Fearlessly she picked the ball from the back of the ruck and went and didn’t look back until she crossed the tryline!
Aspull were not happy campers, and their heads were down, we continued to play with
that pressure and aggression. Forwards made the scrums look easy pushing them back
every time. Due to an Aspull player hurting their ankle in the in the scrum and no safe
place to scrum on the pitch we went uncontested. Aspull scored another try and then
game was over.
We left it all on the pitch having worked incredibly hard as team; coaches expressed how proud they were with everyone who played. I think other teams in our position would have taken a walk over, but we will always go out and give our all.
Our back of the match went to Becky playing 15 and covering a wing, she gave great
direction and made some try saving tackles!
We had two forwards of the match Yasmin who stepped in to play hooker for the first
time and was like a duck to water, to only then come out and play on the wing, such a
versatile player. Secondly Chappers who left a family wedding in Italy just to play for us!
Finally, a special mention to Grace to who received her 25th cap for Wirral Warriors.
Grace hasn’t missed a league game in the last three seasons! The team wouldn’t be
where it is today with her continued commitment to the team.
We would also like to use this opportunity to say a massive thank you to Steve Peters
who has recently hung up his coaching boots. Steve has given up so much of his time
supporting and coaching the Warriors and has helped the team grow. Steve has also
created a girl’s pathway so there is an opportunity for every girl to play rugby at Wirral
rugby club, something very few clubs offer, and the club is incredibly and proud and
thankful for this. Tim Hodson and Sam Olle are now leading the girl’s section with the
support of the Warriors.

Wirral Tigers Update
Wirral Touch Rugby Tournament 15th-16th June 2024 at Wirral Rugby Club.
Not since the days when the Battle of Brunanburh (Bromborough) was fought on the Wirral Peninsular between all the Old Clan Kings across the country were King Æthelstan won the battle and England was form as one united country. However, unrest is in the air and dark clouds are forming. The old clans are restless. To ease tensions a great Wirral Touch Rugby Festival has been announced on the old battle grounds of Wirral. All the old clans are invited to come out and reaffirm bonds that make this great game and country of England.
Who will come to the festival?
OLDERSHAW RFU
Will it be the Oldershaw Pirates and will the men of Oldershaw Rugby Club stand side
to side with their women and put forward a team.
PRENTON RFU
Will it be the Prenton Predators after resting from their long contact winter campaign or
do we have to issue a formal challenge to get them wound up. The honour of your club
is at stake.
WALLASEY RFU
Could it be the Wallasey Warriors and can they be prized away from the wailing calls of
the Mermaid that haunts their shores Or maybe she could play for them as they need to
have women in their Team.
PARKONIANS RFU
Will the Parkonians Pumas again prowl the club of Wirral taking prey as they see fit. Do
not be the only club on Wirral to not come up to the oche.
PORT SUNLIGHT RFU
Or will it be the Port Sunlight Panthers, proud warriors of old who have taken down
many a great team of Wirral. They know the game so should be there to represent the
club.
HOYLAKE RFU
Then will it be the ladies of the Hoylake Harriers and will they take to the air with the
support of the men of Hoylake. (come on guys your clubs honour is at stake ).
BIRKENHEAD PARK RFU
Maybe it will be the oldest club on Wirral that stands up to the plate in the form of the
Birkenhead Bulls. Could they be sharpening up their horns and will we once again hear
their loud bellows across the Wirral plains. The Birkenhead women touch teams know
where the medal are made. Will the men dare tread their path in support.
CHESTER RFU
There are rumbles within the old walls of Chester that the gates maybe once again be
opened and the Romans in the form of the Chester Cheetahs and the Centurion’s. Will
they once again ride out to try to take over were many a Caesar failed.
CALDY RFU
The Caldy Cobras are already hissing and spitting at the bit to squeeze the lives out any
teams who dares to step forward.
LIVERPOOL TRITONS
The waters within the Mersey are stirring and a Triton has been seen rising up from the
depths of the Mersey. Camps have already been set up on the New Brighton plains and
their fires are burning bright, ready to attack at any moment.
LIVERPOOL OTTERS
On the banks of the Mersey waterfront of Otterspool great ships are ready to sail for the
shores of Wirral. The old clan of Otter’s men and women are preparing to set sail and if
successful a new mighty Otterman Empire could emerge.
OLD ANSELMIANS RFU.
Since the start of Christendom and their great campaigns across Europe the Christian
Crusaders are again rising up in the form of the Anselmian Assassins.
They have already tipped their toes in the holy water preparing for a new campaign in
the spring. Be prepared to see those Knight in White Satin wearing the red crosses.
WATERLOO RFU
Across the channel the French are quaking in their boots and ready to meet their
Waterloo. The Waterloo Wrangles are polishing up their wellington boots and will once
again be throwing canon and thunder at anybody who stands in their way. Even with
one arm and one eye they have their telescope pointing across.
the waters to Wirral.
VIC’s VIPERS
Will the financial world be there represented by Vic’s Vipers. Do not cross this team as
your money will disappear from your accounts as you score a try against them. It’s a
bull market in the game of banking.
WIRRRAL RFU. WIRRAL TIGERS
And last but not least the Wirral Tigers are awaiting your presence and are purring away
and pacing their boundary ready roar at any team who dare take up the challenge.
After all the bloodshed tea and scones will be served in the main lounge before the
party really begins and we drink and dance the night away.
So come on Clubs take up the challenge and wind your players up to join in what could
be a great event for the clubs of Wirral. It is about a bit of fun with a competitive edge. If
you need any help or training in the rules or setting up a team, get in touch and we will
come and provide any support you need.
Other clubs outside Wirral are invited to attend.

Club Update
I would just like to back Sams mention of Steve Peters, throughout a very illustrious
career both playing and coaching, Steve has always held Wirral close to his heart and
has worked tirelessly in the women’s and girls’ game at the club. I am sure Steve will
continue to come to the club to watch the game he adores, so a big thankyou and good
luck in your retirement from rugby.
WIRRAL FANTASY SIX NATIONS LEAGUE
After the second round of matches there were a few changes on the leaderboard with
Mozza taking 1 st spot from Big John Greg.
All teams need paying for now please, so if you can pay this weekend behind the bar
that would be great.
1 st position- Mozza 783 points
2 nd position- Big John Greg 775 points
3 rd position- Aled Vix 772points
Good luck to all competitors this week and look forward to seeing the table in 2 weeks’
