A welcome note written by Grace Baird - Warriors Captain

If you asked me to describe what it’s like to play for the Warriors, I would always start by telling you this story…

In February 2019 we had an away fixture at a fairly local team; we were, unfortunately, plagued with injuries and took a significantly reduced squad away with us to what was already promised to be a testing match.

17 minutes into the game we were 17-0 down, in the pouring rain, with another unfortunate injury and some less than friendly opposition. We could have been deflated, but we weren't, instead, each time, we picked the ball up from behind the posts, ran it back to the centre and never once put our heads down. We sang, laughed and played to our hearts content that day, with the referee passing comment that he had never seen such an enthusiastic team of women. We came off the pitch battered, bleeding, soaked right through… and victorious… winning the game 29-27 with a last minute try.

This is the unbreakable warrior spirit that has seen a group of women who had never so much as touched a rugby ball before 2017 come through two seasons, with a dwindling squad at times, and stand before you now as a fully established team entering the local league this season. We are a committed, talented and passionate squad of women and we hope to grow our team further and encourage more women to join the game and discover just how strong you can become when you pick up a rugby ball and surround yourself with positive team mates.

Attitude in rugby is everything.
Professionalism, respect and sportsmanship are why we choose this sport and why we step out onto the pitch and put our bodies on the line every week. Rugby is more than a sport; it’s a canvas for friendships, inclusion and self-belief. No team displays this better than the Warriors.

We couldn’t ask for a better home to start our league campaign than Wirral. The support and guidance offered to us these past few weeks has been heart-warming and inspiring. Many of us have friends, family members and spouses playing for the club; it will be an honour to now wear this shirt with pride. This is the start of an exciting adventure for both the club and the squad and I cannot wait to see how it unfolds.

We will be training at the club from 12th August – Monday nights 1845-2015 and Thursday nights 1900-2030. This is open to women of any age, fitness level, shape, size, rugby ability – we don’t care! We would love to see you on the pitch with us!

We will also be updating the club website with our fixtures as soon as we receive these in August – we would love to see as many friendly faces as possible cheering us on from the side-lines… bring the family, have a drink and see if we can’t inspire you to join in our endless enthusiasm.

On behalf of the Warriors, I wish to thank everyone at the club for embracing our arrival. We look forward to supporting you all in the future, to growing our relationship and to hopefully seeing you all in the bar next season for a gin or two!

I could not be prouder of this team and I know, with our ever present determination and positivity, we will make you proud too.
Here’s to a long and happy relationship,

Grace Baird
Club Captain
