No repeat of the previous week's victory against higher placed opposition as Sale ease into the final.

Following last week’s dramatic Cheshire Cup quarter final win over Caldy, Wirral were now faced with a step up in opposition as they played Sale from National League 1 in the semi-final. Sale sent a strong team pending the league fixtures starting next Saturday. Wirral made only 2 changes to the starting XV from last week with CRAIG HARVEY and CHRIS SPEED being rested to allow niggling injuries to clear up they were replaced by DAVE MORLEY and SAM BROADBENT respectively.
Wirral played with the wind advantage towards the clubhouse in the first half.
After two early penalties Sale were deep in the Wirral 20m area and showed their expertise in moving towards the line when second row crossed from close in, Chris Johnson went on to convert as he did with 8 out of 9 attempts. The second try gave an example of sale’s attacking abilities as they broke from 60m out allowing Mulchrone to score. After 24 minutes Sale had raced way to a 0-28 lead with two more converted tries however there was a wry smile from the Wirral supporters when a Sale player dropped the ball when in the act of scoring with no Wirral player nearby.
Wirral had a period of possession and retained the ball for a number of phases and made some progress with the best opportunity coming from a passage of play close to the Sale 20m line when DAVE MORLEY put JAMES ANNETTS through only for him to be brought down 10m short. ROB PEARL came on for HAYDEN LONG with MATT DALTON moving up to second row. The final try of the half came when Wirral lost possession in the Sale 20m area and showed the speed of the Sale counter attack to score in the corner to give the away side a 0-35 lead at half-time.
At the break, Wirral made a number of changes, TOM ROUTLY for JAMES ANNETTS with MATT LOON moving to centre, JOE MURRAY, RYAN HIGGINSON and MATT RINGER on for JOSH STEAD, CHRIS HUGHES and STUART GRATTON respectively.
Within 3 minutes of the second half starting, Sale increased the lead to 0-40 with a line out catch and drive. For the next 18 minutes Wirral held Sale at bay as they enjoyed a good spell of possession. On the 63rd minute came the clearest yellow card of any season which even the recipient JACK YARKER would accept. From the resultant scrum Sale easily scored out wide. The final substitutions were then made with LIAM KEANE, RYAN STEAD, JOSH CONNOLLY and ADAM DON came on in place of MATT DALTON, PAUL LEWIS, CHRIS CROWLEY and TOM PARRY respectively. In the final minutes of the game Sale ran in 2 further tries to extend their lead tom 0-61.
Incidentally the game was refereed by Premiership referee, Ian Tempest, who resides on the Wirral.
Overall Wirral stuck to their task and despite the defeat the last two matches has given Simon Verbickas optimism for the league which commences next week with Wirral away at Billingham. See notice board for the time the coach leaves.
