Unlike the starting three games of the season our next opposition, fellow Cheshire RFU Club Lymm, are well known to us. Their First Team, much like our own, is built around local players, many of whom have come up through their very successful Minis and Juniors set up.
Games between us are inevitably closely contested affairs and last years fixture away at Crouchley Lane proved to be no different; a late try by Rob Pearl resulted in a 24-27 win for Wirral despite being 'slow out of the blocks' and hampered by several injuries. Lymm subsequently won the reverse fixture at the Memorial Ground 21-30.
Lymm could not have started this season's campaign better with maximum points from all three games, including an impressive 5-46 win away at Sandal last time out. This means at this early stage of the season they are on top of the league, with Wirral 5 points behind them in 5th place. As well as the usual home-grown talent such as flanker Sam Mullarkey, scrum half Andy Davies and prop Jordan Widdrington there have also been some useful additions to the Lymm squad such as England Counties (ex-Caldy and Chester) prop Gav Woods and much-travelled (Caldy, LSH, Fylde, Sale Jets, Ormskirk) Ally Sutherland. Cormac Nolan at full back has also made signifcant contributions in games this season scoring both tries and conversions.
Neither of these sides will want to lose to local opposition and will wish to capitalise on good starts to the season. With both teams prepared to play a free-flowing exciting brand of rugby the trip up the M56 will be worth it for supporters and the team will appreciate a substantial away contingent on the touchline.
