Wirral come away from their travels with only a losing bonus point again.
For the away game at KL we left Wirral in pouring rain but this had ceased by the time we got to Wigan although rain came during the middle part of the game.
The team showed changes with JACK YARKER not considered fit so PAUL LEWIS moved up to the front row with STUART GRATTON able to step up to substitute prop if necessary. ROB PEARL returned to the back row in place of JAMES REEVE, JAMES ANNETTS was not available through work so CHRIS SPPED moved into the centre with BEN BROOKS on the wing. The subs were MIKE WARREN, SAM BROADBENT and making his debut in the first team, JOE PROBERT.
Both teams deployed the kicking game in the early stages of the game. Wirral took the lead in the 6th minute with a penalty from 24m out by CRAIG HARVEY and 6 minutes later had the chance to double the lead with another penalty from the same area but the kick was missed. Three minutes later, KL missed a penalty as it hit the post from 38 m. In the 17th minute KL were on the scoreboard with a penalty through Ben Walker and 4 minutes later took the lead with a second Walker penalty. At this stage some of the decisions by the referee were baffling as he allowed players coming in from the side and this continued throughout the game.
Wirral then spent some 7 minutes in the KL 20m area as they edged towards the KL whitewash and after a number of phases the team would lose possession and eventually KL cleared .On 30 minutes, ROB PEARL was sin binned for holding on for only a few seconds! Again pressure came from Wirral and their only reward was another penalty from CRAIG HARVEY leaving the score 6-6 at half time, having missed another penalty in the minute before the break.
In the first few minutes of the second half KL were awarded 3 penalties two of which were kickable which were taken by Ben Walker and Charles Ramwell to give KL a 12-6 lead. Wirral came back and attacked down the left through BEN BROOKS who took play into the KL 20m area where he was taken out illegally, only to protest to the referee in colourful language and was given a yellow card. It was 16 minutes!! before he was allowed back on the field of play despite numerous calls to the referee. After 60 minutes SAM BROADBENT came on for CHRIS SPEED (knee injury), JOE PROBERT on for DAVE MORLEY with Craig going to 10. KL had a brief spell in the Wirral half and TOM PARRY had to touch down following a speculative kick downfield from KL.
Right up to the final whistle Wirral were pressing but could not break through the KL defence but Wirral lost too many balls when in control. With 2 minutes to go MIKE WARREN came on for STUART GRATTON to give 4 back row forwards on the field in the quest to win the game at the death.
