Wirral 2’s travelled to Warrington knowing they were in for a difficult game against a strong Warrington team, who had beaten Rossendale only a couple of weeks ago.

We were pleased to introduce senior colt Matt ‘Dolo’ Dalton for his debut along with John Harris making his first start for some time and also Joe Totty on the bench. With a number of people unavailable Mike Warren was asked to play 9 instead of back row.
The pitch was in magnificent condition and allowed us to play great running rugby throughout the game, in what was one of the best performances of the season.
Within the first ten minutes, Wirral showed their intent and whenever we had the ball we were looking to run it at every occasion. The first try was a result of champagne rugby. Col Hughes made a lovely break down the right wing . The ball was then spun from right to left and great hands from backs and forwards alike, saw Phelo cut a line straight through the Wire defence and score from 20 yards out. The conversion was missed.
Warrington then started get some ball and scored and converted a penalty from 30 metres out. A good try from their winger from a kick chase allowed him to score under the sticks. The conversion was kicked and Warrington were 10 -5 up.
Wirral assumed the attack and the next try was one of sheer magic. The ball was fielded from a kick well by Sheldon just outside the 22, who passed inside to Gidders, beating the first defender and throwing a miss pass to Corny on the wing. Corny made a break on the right switched to Gidders on the loop who then broke the gain line, popped inside to Ludsy, who drew the 15 and popped to John Harris who then unselfishly passed to Jo Adnams who just about managed to get over the whitewash. Great clinical rugby and the extras were added 12-10. Wirral then finished the half with a converted penalty from JC, thus making it 15-10.
Second half brought a couple of changes but it didn’t affect proceedings. The pack working well as a unit running hard, supporting well and sticking to the game plan . Matt Dalton leading the way with a number of storming breaks. Jo Adnams was at the heart of all that was good, Pender providing the platform with numerous carries and Ludsy being the glue that brought it all together. The backs were running everything back with interest showing how dangerous team we can be. Sheldon was carrying immensely and making yards for fun.
Our last try came after 60 minutes , we had a number of opportunities to go for sticks but trusted our ability and ran it. From a breakdown the ball was spun to Corny who in one motion flicked the ball to Dalton to give him a much deserved debut try. Conversion was missed 20-10. At some point Warrington scored a penalty to bring the game closer but the game was sealed by a JC penalty.
23 -13 and we killed the game with smart tight rugby.
Next week is the big away trip to Kirkby Lonsdale and we need to perform better than the home game. We are hitting our stride just at the right time.
MoM was Matt Dalton and top tackler was JC for textbook hits against the big lads.
