Wirral overcame Kendal to close within 3 points of the table-toppers (with games in hand) retaining their unbeaten start to the season in a hard fought match in windy conditions.

With the wind blowing across the ground towards the motorway, Wirral played towards the main
road in the first half. From the start it was Wirral who were playing the rugby but could not break
through the stern Kendal defence. It was Wirral who scored first when play 30m out saw an inside
pass to ALI BAKER, who had come looking for the ball in a planned move, scythe through the Kendal
defence to score under the posts with BEN BROOKS converting 7-0.
With play in the 20m area a Wirral clearance was charged down and Kendal were on hand to kick on
and score by the posts, this try was converted 7-7. Despite pressure from Wirral they could not add
to the score in the first half, although Kendal missed an easy penalty to take the lead. In the minutes
before half time, try scorer ALI BAKER was sin binned for a high tackle when making a fine covering
tackle.
The wind advantage was with Wirral in the second half and some astute kicks downfield kept play in
the Kendal half. Attacks were breaking down through dropped passes and perhaps the backs being
too shallow, however one such attack enabled ALI BAKER to round his winger and score in the
corner, the conversion was missed 12-7. Despite the pressure, Kendal stuck to their task and made
progress downfield assisted by penalties in their favour. Pressure on the Wirral line resulted in
Kendal scoring wide out to level the scores. The conversion was missed 12-12.
The final 20 minutes was all Wirral as they pressed forward and the game was settled by a fine
individual try, when a chip over the Kendal defence by DAN HARVEY and kick forward saw DAN
outpace the Kendal defence to touch down just before the dead ball whitewash, the conversion was
missed, 17-12. Matters were settled a few minutes later when BEN BROOKES kicked a penalty to put
Wirral one score ahead. 20-12.
Kendal tried in vain to get back into the game and matters spilled over when an altercation near the
Wirral line saw a Kendal player sent off with BEN BROOKS receiving a yellow card.
