With heavy rain having fallen on Saturday, the coaches were delighted to get the go-ahead for this fixture with Warrington, which had been rearranged as a home match after "Wire's" pitches were judged unplayable. Despite the heavy mud and cold, the spirit in both games, from both teams, their coaches and supporters, was excellent.
The first match saw Warrington playing with the kind of direct, hard-running, style typical of a club from Rugby League's heartland. Wirral's defenders were initially wary of committing themselves to the tag, resulting in early tries for the away team. Wirral hit back through the more indirect running lines of Luka and Oliver, and with Bailey also scoring, Wirral led 3-2 at half time. Warrington had been warned a couple of times in the first half about carrying the ball in one hand, and handing-off defenders. This proved to be their Achilles Heel in the second half, resulting in a number of turnovers for repeat offences. This allowed Wirral to dominate possession, and the home team ran out easy winners in the end, 8-5.
The second match was a much closer, more attritional affair, with both teams guilty of handling errors. Rosabella was a very willing first-receiver throughout the game, and Ellie proved to be an able distributor. The lead changed hands regularly and the match turned into a real dog fight, with Matty, Dan, Will and Dylan all doing a great job at tagging. Luka was introduced as a second-half substitute, and he made a great impact, scoring three, excellent tries. In the end, Wirral squeezed ahead to win 5-4.
The Wirral coaches were delighted to award Bailey the Player of the Week award for an all-action display.
We very much look forward to playing Warrington again.
