On a lovely sunny day, Wirral welcomed Stockport for what promised to be a competitive encounter—and for the opening stages, it certainly delivered. Wirral fielded a full squad of 22 for the first time this season, a milestone that reflected the growing depth and commitment within the team.
The first 10 minutes saw both sides evenly matched, trading possession and testing each other’s defensive structures without either gaining a clear advantage. However, as the half progressed, Stockport began to find their rhythm. Capitalising on key moments, they ran in five unanswered tries, converting four of them to take a commanding 33–0 lead into the break.
At half time, Wirral made five changes to their back line, and the impact was immediate. The team returned to the field with renewed composure and intent, stringing together phases of controlled, attacking rugby. Wave after wave of pressure was applied, forcing Stockport onto the back foot. Despite Wirral’s persistence and creativity, Stockport’s defence had to dig deep, holding firm to keep their line intact.
The second half ended as the first had, with the scoreboard unchanged at 33–0 to Stockport. While the result may not reflect it, this was an amazing performance from Wirral, who showed clear signs of adapting their tactics and growing into the game. Their second-half display, in particular, demonstrated the high standard they are capable of reaching.
Looking ahead, the focus now turns to the preseason, where there is real optimism that this evolving style of play will translate into consistent performances.
